7 N A T I O L E W S 7 What Should You Do with Facebook?
Right now, there's probably no better way to reach your audience than through social media, and Facebook is at the top of the list when it comes to reaching the most people in your area.   Let's say your chapter has decided to take advantage of social media with a Facebook page. A dozen or so members "like" it and are awaiting posts from you to come through their newsfeeds. So now what? How do your best utilize this forum to communicate with your chapter members? Here are some tips to keep in mind when it comes to communicating with existing (and potential) members: Provide Valuable Content First and foremost, the content on your chapter Facebook page should reinforce your chapter mission and goals. Understand the importance of providing fresh content on a regular and consistent basis to keep members engaged. Your content should be of interest to the readers, be timely and accurate. In addition to posting about upcoming events, upload photos and videos of chapter activities, or provide links to articles that may be of interest to your members. Engage your Readers One goal of having a Facebook page is to encourage conversation. Utilizing polls is a great way to solicit opinions on current issues within Defense Financial Management, as well as obtain feedback on chapter issues. Encourage fellow chapter officers to actively participate on the page, seeding conversation and bringing others into the conversations. Manage the Page One of the most important aspects of having a Facebook page for your chapter is maintaining it so its information remains current and timely. The easiest way to do this is to have a total of two or three "administrators" of the page. These would be chapter officers (in addition to you) who are most involved in the daily happenings of your chapter and are able to update your network accordingly. Keeping the number of administrators to a minimum eliminates confusion over who is responsible for posting what and when, and also allows you observe comments on your page. We recommend having no more than three (3) people as administrators for your page, and if one of the administrators leaves the chapter their access needs to be removed as well. The ASMC National Headquarters has a Facebook page, and "liking" us is a good place to start. You can see what kind of news we're posting, as well as find other chapters' sites. For more details) on how to create and manage a Facebook page, we recommend the following sites for simple, quick tips: Facebook 101   An Easy Facebook Guide for New Users  If you would like help with the process of establishing a Facebook page or just have questions, please Simone Toth at N A T I O L E W S 7
