1 Multiplying Rational Numbers 2-3
Objective: Students will multiply integers and rational numbers. S. Calahan 2008

2 Multiplication of Integers
The product of two numbers having the same sign is positive. Example: 9(3) = 27 -4(-3) = 12 11/30/2018

3 Multiplication of Integers
The product of two numbers having different signs is negative. Example: -12(2) = -24 11/30/2018

4 Multiplicative Property of -1
The product of any number and -1 is its additive inverse. Example: (-1)(4) = -4 (-1)(-5) = 5 11/30/2018

5 Evaluate Expressions -3(x2) if x = -2 = -3(-2)2 = -3 (4) = -12
ab – 3 if a = -2 and b = 3 -2(3) – 3 -6 – 3 = -6 + (-3) = -9 11/30/2018

6 Simplify 6(-2x) – 14x = -12x – 14x = -12x + (-14x) = -26x 11/30/2018

7 Simplify -7(3d + d) = -7(4d) = -28d 11/30/2018
