1 Warm Up # How do materials move through plants?

2 Plant Processes and Reproduction
Lesson 1: Energy Processing in Plants

3 Essential Questions How do materials move through plants?
How do plants perform photosynthesis? What is cellular respiration? What is the relationship between photosynthesis and cellular respiration?

4 How can you show the movement of materials inside a plant? ACTIVITY
Take 2 stalks of celery from the bunch Carefully cut the bottom of 1 stalk Place blue coloring in 2 beakers of 100mL of water. Place celery into each beaker Observe what happens What happened to each stalk? Why did this happen?

5 Materials for Plant Processes
Water moves through plant using xylem once it enters through the roots Liquid sugar enters phloem from food-making cells and goes throughout the plant Require oxygen and carbon dioxide to make food

6 Photosynthesis What materials are needed for photosynthesis to take place?

7 Photosynthesis A series of chemical reactions that convert light energy, water, and carbon dioxide into the food-energy molecule glucose and give off oxygen

8 Leaves and Photosynthesis
Carbon dioxide, water vapor, and oxygen pass through the stomata to enter the cell Cuticle protects the cell Palisade mesophyll cells and chloroplasts is where photosynthesis occurs Spongy mesophyll cells where gases for photosynthesis flow through

9 Leaves and Photosynthesis

10 Capturing Light Energy First step of Photosynthesis
Plants capture in light in chloroplasts Chloroplasts have plant pigments that absorb and reflect light in chlorophyll Plants appear green due to chlorophyll reflecting green light Once chlorophyll traps and stores light it’s transferred to other molecules like water molecule

11 Can you observe plant processes? ACTIVITY
Put potting soil in the bottom of a plastic bag and dampen the soil Drop several radish seeds into the bag and close leaving a small opening for air Place the bag upright in a place with different light sources. Observe for 4-5 days Place bromthymol blue solution upright in the bag next to the seedlings Seal the bag Observe the next day Describe the differences in seedling samples. What do you notice? What changes did you notice with the solution?

12 Cellular Respiration A series of chemical reactions that convert the energy in food molecules into a usable form of energy called ATP Glucose molecules break down during cellular respiration, which is used to make ATP (energy) Requires oxygen and produces water and carbon dioxide as waste products Occurs in cytoplasm and mitochondria of cells Why is cellular respiration important?
