3 A03 (Historians) This section of your coursework has two main compartments: You need to show understanding of two historians VIEWS, on the topic of your coursework (i.e. what is their answer to your c/w question?) anti-Semitism: goldhagen, browning king: hodgson, carson You then need to evaluate the context in which they write by considering: WHEN DO THEY WRITE AND HOW IT WOULD IMPACT THEIR INTERPRETATION THEIR ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS (EDUCATION BACKGROUND, SPECIALISMS, AWARDS) ANY OTHER RELEVANT DETAIL (E.G. GOLDHAGEN’S FATHER IS A HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR) Know Which historians you need to research for your coursework Understand How to use these historians in your coursework Evaluate The views and context of your historians

Make sure to point out that even level 1 says (differing = more than one) Know Which historians you need to research for your coursework Understand How to use these historians in your coursework Evaluate Model answers from last years cohort

5 What will this look like in my coursework?
After your introduction, there will be a ‘historians section’ This will be made up of 4 paragraphs and these paragraphs will be: Historian 1 (view) Historian 2 (view) Historian 1 (context in which they write) Historian 2 (context in which they write) Word count: 1000 words (250 words per paragraph approx.) Then, in your themes you will evaluate whether your find your historians convincing or not Know Which historians you need to research for your coursework Understand How to use these historians in your coursework Evaluate Model answers from last years cohort

7 Historian’s views – what do I actually write?
Historian 1 (view) Historian 2 (view) Historian 1 (context in which they write) Historian 2 (context in which they write) For each of your two historians, you will write one paragraph where you demonstrate your understanding of their argument on your topic. To do this, you need to: Show that you understand their ‘overall’ answer to your question Show that you understand the reasons they give for that answer (specific details) Know Which historians you need to research for your coursework Understand How to use these historians in your coursework Evaluate Model answers from last years cohort

8 How do I know what my historians think?
IN ORDER TO FIND OUT A HISTORIANS VIEW YOU NEED TO… READ THEIR BOOK :o Yes… THIS MEANS ACTUALLY READING PAGES OF A PROPER BOOK THAT DOES NOT HAVE IMAGES. YOU WILL BE EXPECTED TO REFERENCE THESE BOOKS AND THEIR PAGE NUMBERS, SO NO, YOU CANNOT GO on amazon and read the reviews (yes this has happened, yes they were caught, YES THEY DID BAD…) Know Which historians you need to research for your coursework Understand How to use these historians in your coursework Evaluate Model answers from last years cohort

9 CONTEXT IN WHICH HISTORIANS WRITE

13 How the rest of this lesson will work
I will spend some time going through the historians for anti-Semitism, and then time going through historians for king. When I am not talking through your historians, you need to silently read the extracts you printed for homework, and answer the questions on the sheet I am about to give out. If you finish, you should try and summarise the following for each historian What is their answer to your coursework question? What do they say specifically to back up their answer? Know Your historian’s interpretations in relation to your investigation Understand The specific arguments made by your historian Evaluate Whether you are convinced by your historians

14 Anti-Semitism (An overview of the historians)
Know Your historian’s interpretations in relation to your investigation Understand The specific arguments made by your historian Evaluate Whether you are convinced by your historians

15 Anti-Semitism: views Browning
Studied police battalion 101 (committed massacres and round-ups of Jews for deportations to the Nazi death camps in German-occupied Poland in 1942) the men of Unit 101 killed out of a basic obedience to authority and peer pressure Therefore, they did not killed out of blood- lust or anti-Semitism Goldhagen Also studied Police Battalion 101 Believes german’s were ‘willing executioners’ during nazi Germany/the holocaust This is because of an ‘eliminationist anti-Semitism’, which was unique to the german people Eliminationist anti-Semitism developed in centuries preceding nazi Germany The nazi party simply ‘activated’ the eliminationist anti-Semitism amongst the german people What is their answer to your question? Know Your historian’s interpretations in relation to your investigation Understand The specific arguments made by your historian Evaluate Whether you are convinced by your historians

16 Anti-Semitism: context
Browning Wrote following the fall of the Berlin WALL (1990) WHICH ALLOWED HIM access to new archives previously kept secret by the Soviet Union American historian with a professorship He was a witness in the David Irving vs. Deborah Lipstadt case (film called ‘denial’ is about this trial on Netflix!) Goldhagen Wrote in reaction to browning’s ordinary men PROFESSOR OF GOVERNMENT AND SOCIAL STUDIES (NOT A HISTORIAN) Goldhagen’s father survived the holocaust: his “understanding of Nazism and of the Holocaust is firmly indebted" to his father's influence Goldhagen's book went on to win the American Political Science Association’s, 1994 Gabriel A. Almond Award in comparative politics, and the Democracy Prize of the Journal for German and International Politics. Time magazine reported that it was one of the two most important books of 1996 The book sparked controversy in the press and academic circles. Should the bullet points be considered a strength or limit? why? Know Your historian’s interpretations in relation to your investigation Understand The specific arguments made by your historian Evaluate Whether you are convinced by your historians

17 King: views hodgson King was the most important leader
The negatives outweigh the positives (LOOKS A LOT AT NEGATIVES) WITHOUT King, the CRM would have followed a different path Obama would not have been elected without King carson Studied the significance of king King’s image has been cultivated into one of a black heroic figures ‘king myth’ = king’s importance has been exaggerated King was important, but we should not forget bigger social factors (such as grass roots). The crm would have followed the same path without king What is their answer to your question? Know Your historian’s interpretations in relation to your investigation Understand The specific arguments made by your historian Evaluate Whether you are convinced by your historians
