4 Example first 2 sentences to prove your author’s purpose:
In 2011, the “New York Times” newspaper released an article by John Smith entitled, “Dog Rescue Numbers Decreasing”. John Smith’s purpose for writing this article was to inform readers about a specific topic: dog rescue.

5 Now write the first two sentences of your paragraph:
Your turn to practice! Sentence 1 includes: Margaret Atwood- author “Computer Sales Declining”- article name “Detroit Free Press”- source October 1, date of publish sentence 2 includes: to inform- stating the author’s purpose of the article Now write the first two sentences of your paragraph:

Graphs? Charts? Interviews? Historical facts? Research? What sort of evidence? Then, use your list to make the body of your paragraph. Your turn! After reading your article, make a list of how the author achieved his or her purpose: 1. ___________________________ 2. ___________________________ 3. ___________________________ 4. ___________________________ Then, use your list to make the body of your paragraph.

7 Example body sentences to prove your author’s purpose:
1. Smith provides data regarding animal shelters and rescues, stating that people are not adopting as many animals as they did in previous years. 2. The article provides readers with graphs that show the amount of dogs adopted over a 10 year span. This evidence shows readers how the number of adoptions have decreased over the past couple of years. 3. The author included interviews with people who run local animal shelters. These interviews provide insight into what type of people are adopting dogs, and what types of dogs are not being adopted. Now you try with your own list! Be sure to explain how the items proved the author’s purpose.

These interviews provide insight into what type of people are adopting dogs, and what types of dogs are not being adopted. The purpose of Smith’s article is to provide enough information for readers to become educated on the topic of animal adoption, specifically dog adoption, within the city of Canton. *Notice how I put all my sentences together to form a paragraph. At the end, I restated the purpose.
