1 10-16-17 Comprehensive: Reviewing IV & DV

2 Do Now: Answer the following in your science notebook
Identify the independent variable and dependent variable in the following scenarios: Jasmine is interested in whether plant fertilizer affects how many flowers a plant produces. IV: plant fertilizer DV: flower production Ethan is curious about whether plant growth is affected by the color of light it is exposed to. IV: Color of light DV: Plant growth Madison wants to know if her free throw shooting percentage is dependent on how much sleep she gets the night before. IV: amount of sleep DV: free throw shooting percentage

7 Review: Identifying Independent Variable & Dependent Variable
1. A study was done to find if different tire treads affect the braking distance of a car. DV: height of bean plants 4. The higher the temperature of the air in the oven, the faster a cake will bake. IV: different tire treads DV: braking distance IV: air temperature 2. The time it takes to run a mile depends on the person’s running speed. DV: cake baking speed 5. Lemon trees receiving the most water produced the most lemons. IV: person’s running speed DV: time to run a mile DV: amount of lemons 3. The height of bean plants if affected by the amount of water they receive. IV: amount of water

8 Retake Requirements Review the explanations you wrote down today.
Complete the online tutorial at iew/126096 Complete and bring the required additional targeted practice assignment with you when you come in to retake the assignment.

9 Practice: Types of Investigations Game
Lesson Objective: I can identify the types of research questions that each scientific investigation would best answer. In assigned groups of 3-4, each group will be given a bag of paper. First, take the pieces of paper that say “Observational Study”, “Comparative Study”, and “Controlled Experiment” and place them on your desk. Put the rest of the paper back into the bag. Wait quietly until all groups are ready.

10 Instructions You will be playing a game against one another. Groups will attempt to place the statements under the correct headings. The first group that can correctly place the statements wins. When a group is done, 1 member will write their group number on the Smart board. Mr. Santos will walk around to check group answers in the order listed on the board. If a group is not completely correct, one member of the group must erase their number from the board and the group will fix their answers. When the group believes their answers are corrected, one member will re-write their number at the end of the list. The game will continue until the top 3 groups are identified or until time runs out.

11 Controlled Experiment
Game Answer Key: In your science notebook, copy at least 2 questions for each type of study. Observational Study Comparative Study Controlled Experiment What do gorillas eat? What is the germination rate of an apple seed? How many students at SCA live in Riverview? How long can an earthworm survive above ground? What are the frequency differences between a trumpet and trombone? How similar are the nests of bald eagles and golden eagles? What are the similarities and differences among elephants and tapirs? How does the orbit of Pluto compare to other dwarf planets? What is the proportion of males to females in this classroom? How does sleeping affect memory How does amount of sunlight affect the activity of snakes? What is the affect of pesticide usage on ant colony growth? What is the affect of water pH on clothing?

12 Student Work: Identifying Type of Investigation based on a Research Question
Lesson Objective: I can identify the types of research questions that each scientific investigation would best answer. Directions: Using the provided worksheet, practice identifying the types of research questions that each scientific investigation would best answer.
