1 AMS Department Chairs Workshop
The Undergraduate Mission - Malcolm Adams, University of Georgia

2 Gateway Courses Engage to Excel: Producing One Million Additional College Graduates with Degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Feb. 2012 Recommendation 3. Launch a national experiment in postsecondary mathematics education to address the mathematics preparation gap. This national experiment should fund a variety of approaches, including …(3) college mathematics teaching and curricula developed and taught by faculty from mathematics-intensive disciplines other than mathematics, including physics, engineering, and computer science Presidents Council of Advisors on Science and Technology

3 Gateway Courses Learning Support (Remediation) Pathways STEM Pathway
Statistics Quantitative Literacy Modeling STEM Pathway College Algebra PreCalculus Calculus

4 Learning Support Percent beginning students enrolled in remediation
Two year colleges: 52% Four year colleges: 24% Percent of those that do not complete the associated gateway course Two year: 80% Four year: 67% Data from Complete College America. Remark that even institutions that don’t teach learning support need to be aware of this movement because of transfer articulation

5 Solutions? Co-Requisite Remediation Technology Appropriate Pathways
Math Emporia Adaptive Learning Appropriate Pathways Complete College America

6 Pathways Carnegie Foundation: Statway, Quantway Alignment with majors
Placement and advising

7 STEM Pathway Insights and Recommendations from the MAA National Study of College Calculus Bressoud, Mesa, Rasmussen Placement Student support Challenging and engaging courses Student centered pedagogies Coordinated instruction (communities of practice) Effective training of grad student TAs Regular use of local data

8 Small Groups What Gateway Course issues are a challenge at your institution? Do you know the success rates for your gateway courses? Are these ok? What changes have you made? Are they effective? How do you know? Implicit Bias: Harvard Implicit Bias Tests Collaborative Learning Where are students recruited from? ?Why do students leave? Are these gender/race neutral environments?

9 2015 CUPM Curriculum Guide to Majors in the Mathematical Sciences
The Math Major 2015 CUPM Curriculum Guide to Majors in the Mathematical Sciences Cognitive Goals: Students should develop effective thinking and communication skills Students should learn to link applications and theory Students should learn to use technological skills Students should develop mathematical independence and experience open-ended inquiry

10 Content Goals Students should …
Learn concepts and methods from calculus and linear algebra Learn to read, understand, analyze, and produce proofs at increasing depth as they progress through a major Learn concepts and methods from data analysis, computing, and mathematical modeling See key ideas and concepts from a variety of perspectives, demonstrating the breadth of mathematics Experience mathematics from the perspective of another discipline Learn key ideas from complementary points of view: continuous and discrete, algebraic and geometric, deterministic and stochastic, exact and approximate Study at least one mathematical area in depth Work independently, or in a small group, on a substantial mathematical project Be provided an orientation to careers in mathematics

11 Group Discussion Possible Topics
To what extent does your program achieve goal 3 (concepts and methods from data analysis, computing, and modeling)? What is the relative importance of goals 2 (proofs) and 5 (perspective of another discipline)? In what ways does your department achieve goal 8 (substantial mathematical project)? Is there a glass ceiling, or do we simply make the career unwelcoming?
