Clouds EQ: What are characteristics of different types of clouds? Cumulus Clouds Form at medium or low elevation. Puffy with flat bottoms. When white they signal fair weather, but when darker, may signal rain or thunderstorms are coming.

Clouds Cirrus Clouds Form at high elevations. Wispy, hair-like clouds usually consisting of ice crystals (Crystallization). Signal fair weather or may also signal an approaching warm front.

Clouds Stratus Clouds Form at LOW or medium elevation. Spread out layer, cover sky like a blanket. As they thicken, precipitation usually occurs over that area. Straight Flat

Clouds Cloud prefix or suffix Nimbus - means “rain”. ex. cumulonimbus or nimbostratus. Alto- means “medium-level” ex. altocumulus or altostratus. Fog – Clouds forming from condensation near the ground.
