1 Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount Part 3/3
Matthew 7 Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount Part 3/3

2 Matthew 7:1 "Judge not, that you be not judged
Matthew 7:1 "Judge not, that you be not judged. 2 For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you. 3 And why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, 'Let me remove the speck from your eye'; and look, a plank is in your own eye? 5 Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.

3 What does “Judge Not” Mean?
“Judge not” does not mean that we never judge, for Jesus commands: John 7:24 Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment." NKJV Jesus commands us to remove what is in our own eye because He commands that we help our brother with his troubles as well. If we never judge anything, we would not be able to discriminate between a beam, a speck and a normal eye. ‘Righteous judgment’ is “handling accurately” or “rightly dividing” the Word of Truth, 2 Timothy 2:15.

4 Matt 7:1-5 // Luke 6:37-42 Luke 6:37 "Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. 38 Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you."   You’ll be treated how you treat others. 39 And He spoke a parable to them: "Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into the ditch? 40 A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is perfectly trained will be like his teacher. 41 And why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, but do not perceive the plank in your own eye? 42 Or how can you say to your brother, 'Brother, let me remove the speck that is in your eye,' when you yourself do not see the plank that is in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck that is in your brother's eye. NKJV

5 Matthew 7:6 Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you in pieces.

6 Pearls Before Swine Characterized as undesirable beasts.
What is under consideration? What is HOLY, pearls and YOU. They do not value it as holy or worth their while. They make themselves dogs or swine by their choices, thus their actions, their words or their lack thereof. You trying to share what is holy with them didn’t make them dogs or swine, but it’s a consequence of their own choices.

7 Matthew 7:7 "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 9 Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent? 11 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in Heaven give good things to those who ask Him!

8 Knocking at the Door Matthew 25:10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding; and the door was shut. 11 Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, 'Lord, Lord, open to us!' 12 But he answered and said, 'Assuredly, I say to you, I do not know you.' NKJV Luke 13:24 "Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I say to you, will seek to enter and will not be able. 25 When once the Master of the house has risen up and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock at the door, saying, 'Lord, Lord, open for us,' and He will answer and say to you, 'I do not know you, where you are from,‘ NKJV

9 Gifts to our Children Parents would not give anything injurious or detrimental to their children. God has greater care for us than parents ever could because He is omniscient and omnipotent. He absolutely knows what is best for us and He can always make it happen. While a flat “loaf” of bread may look very similar to a smooth, flat stone, they are very different. While it is possible that a fish and a serpent look similar in some facial and other features, we see that both of these illustrations show us possible confusions that most people would never make. How much more so with God our Father!

10 Matt 7:7-11 // Luke 11:9-13 Luke 11:9 "So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 11 If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? 13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!" NKJV

11 Matthew 7:12 Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.

12 Matthew 7:13 "Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. 14 Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.

13 Matt 7:13-14 // Luke 13:24 Luke 13:22 And He went through the cities and villages, teaching, and journeying toward Jerusalem. 23 Then one said to Him, "Lord, are there few who are saved?“ And He said to them, 24 "Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I say to you, will seek to enter and will not be able. NKJV

14 Matthew 7:15 "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. 16 You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? 17 Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Therefore by their fruits you will know them.

15 Bearing Good Fruit It’s not a matter of CAN or COULD or WOULD, but BEARING GOOD FRUIT. Notice that good trees BEAR good fruit. Notice that bad trees BEAR bad fruit. It’s not a matter of spring time growth; we bear fruit continually – it’s either good or bad. We could do much “good” but bear bad fruit. Remember the “many” shocked at Judgment in Matt 7:21-23; they were absolutely certain that they were good fruit trees in the Lord’s Kingdom, but found out otherwise.

16 Matt 7:15-20 // Mt 12:33 // Luke 6:43-45 Matt 12:33 "Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or else make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for a tree is known by its fruit. 34 Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. 35 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. 36 But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of Judgment. 37 For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned." NKJV

17 Matt 7:15-20 // Mt 12:33 // Luke 6:43-45 Luke 6:43 "For a good tree does not bear bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. 44 For every tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. NKJV

18 Matthew 7:21 "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the Kingdom of Heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in Heaven. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?‘ 23 And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!'

19 Lawlessness NT:458 anomia (an-om-ee'-ah); from NT:459; illegality, i.e. violation of law or (genitive case) wickedness:- iniquity, transgress (-ion of) the law, unrighteousness. NT:459 anomos (an'-om-os); from NT:1 (as a negative particle) and NT:3551; lawless, i.e. (negatively) not subject to (the Jewish) law; (by implication, a Gentile), or (positively) wicked:- without law, lawless, transgressor, unlawful, wicked. 20 The Most Unpleasant Surprise
They claim to have worked miracles by Divine authority. They sincerely address the Lord Jesus thinking they were His faithful servants throughout. They seem shocked and surprised by the situation. While this should send a tingle down our spine, there were opportunities for them before this point. Matthew 7:7 "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.”

21 Matt 7:21-23 // Luke 6:46 // Luke 13:26-27
Luke 6:46 "But why do you call Me 'Lord, Lord,' and not do the things which I say? NKJV

22 Matt 7:21-23 // Luke 6:46 // Luke 13:26-27
Luke 13:26 then you will begin to say, 'We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets.' 27 But He will say, 'I tell you I do not know you, where you are from. Depart from Me, all you workers of iniquity.' 28 There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the Kingdom of God, and yourselves thrust out They will come from the east and the west, from the north and the south, and sit down in the Kingdom of God. 30 And indeed there are last who will be first, and there are first who will be last." NKJV

23 Iniquity NT:93 adikia (ad-ee-kee'-ah); from NT:94; (legal) injustice (properly, the quality, by implication, the act); morally, wrongfulness (of character, life or act):- iniquity, unjust, unrighteousness, wrong. Notice that departing from Jesus at the time He speaks of will involve weeping and gnashing of teeth. It’s too late by this point. These were Jews confident in their place in the Kingdom who will suffer the shame and humiliation of seeing Gentiles saved while they, the chosen people of God, are thrust out.

24 Matthew 7:24 "Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: 25 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: 27 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall."

25 Matt 7:24-27 // Luke 6:47-49 Luke 6:46 "But why do you call Me 'Lord, Lord,' and not do the things which I say? 47 Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like: 48 He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock. 49 But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it fell. And the ruin of that house was great." NKJV

26 Foundation Work Digging deep to build upon the rock – it requires tremendous, “back breaking” work. 2 Tim 2:15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of Truth. NKJV How much effort do we make to search God’s Word diligently, then search our lives diligently to make sure we know and do His Will? While Jesus shows us that we could fool ourselves and others, the Lord knows our hearts and lives, and He will judge us in the End according to His Word, John 12:48.

27 Matthew 7:28 And so it was, when Jesus had ended these sayings, that the people were astonished at His teaching, 29 for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

28 Jesus Knocks for Us Revelation 3:19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent. 20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me. 21 To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My Throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His Throne. 22 "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches."'" NKJV

29 “What Must I Do To Be Saved?”
Hear The Gospel (John 5:24; Romans 10:17) Believe it (John 3:16-18; John 8:24) Repent Of Your Sins (Luke 13:1-5; Acts 2:38) Confess Jesus as Christ (Mt 10:32; Rom 10:10) Be Baptized (Acts 22:16; Galatians 3:27) Remain Faithful for Life (John 8:31; Rev. 2:10) For The Erring Child of God: Repent (Acts 8:22), Confess (I John 1:9), Pray (Acts 8:22)
