1 Topic/Objective: Choosing a data display
Lesson 11.5 Topic/Objective: Choosing a data display What is the best way to display data? Can choosing a display help you make decisions? If the data are numerical, but are just labels and don’t make sense to compare them, then they are not quantitative, but qualitative.

2 Quantitative Qualitative

3 Its Best Use Bar Graph Circle Graph Histogram Line Graph Line Plot
Type of Display Its Best Use Bar Graph It show the numbers in specific categories Circle Graph compares parts of the data to the whole Histogram Shows the frequency of data into equal intervals Line Graph Shows change over period of time Line Plot Shows how many times each number occurs Pictograph Shows number of items in specific categories with pictures Stem and Leaf List all data in condensed form Table List all of the information

4 Bar Graph Objective: Choose the Appropriate Display
_____________ - Shows the number of items in specific categories. Bar Graph

5 ______________ - Shows the frequency of data that has been organized into equal intervals.
Histogram

6 ______________ - Compares parts of the data to the whole.
Circle Graph

7 ______________ - Shows the number of items in specific categories.
Pictograph

8 ______________ - Shows change over a period of time.
Line Graph

9 ______________ - Shows how many times each number occurs in the data.
Line Plot

10 ___________________- Lists all individual numerical data in a condensed form.
Stem-and-Leaf Plot

11 ______________ -May list all the data individually or by group.
Table

12 Choose an appropriate type of display for each situation.
points scored by individual members of a basketball team compared to the team total CIRCLE GRAPH the profits of a company every year for the last ten years LINE GRAPH, TABLE the population of the states arranged by intervals HISTOGRAM

13 The number of students who wish to order each size of T-shirt
TABLE OR BAR GRAPH OR PICTOGRAPH the amount of sales by different sales people compared to the total sales CIRCLE GRAPH average proficiency test score for five consecutive years LINE GRAPH amount of fat grams in intervals in various sandwiches HISTOGRAM

14 How many students are surveyed?
SCHOOL Which graph below could be used to show a greater difference in favorite classes? Which one is misleading? Why? How many students are surveyed? Answer: Graph B distorts the data as a broken bar graph. English appears five times as large as math in graph B where the actual difference is not as large. Graph B because the interval does not start at 0. Example 7-1b
