1 RESILIENCE Assembly

2 WHAT IS RESILIENCE? Bouncing back - the ability to recover quickly from difficulties. Being positive, even when things don’t seem to be going well… Believing in yourself and your goals. Not being afraid to make mistakes. Being able to handle tricky situations. Trying your best, even if you don’t think you’ll succeed. Never giving up, even when things are really tough!

3 How do we build resilience?
We can build our resilience muscles by practicing resilience. How? Be positive. Remind yourself of all the things you are good at. You are brave and will try new things. It’s ok to ask for help. These are just some of the ways we can build our resilience, there are many more… With each point, expand on it using these notes: Just as we build the muscles in our bodies by exercising, we can build our resilience muscles by practicing resilience. How do we do that? Rather than telling yourself that you can’t do something, tell yourself that you can’t do it yet. Rather than telling yourself you are rubbish at something, remind yourself of all the things you are good at. Remind yourself that you are brave and will try new things. Remind yourself that it’s ok to ask for help. These are just some of the ways we can build our resilience, there are many more…

4 Do these phrases show resilience or not?
I will never be good at this Let’s ask for some help Massive fail Laugh it off I can’t do it… yet! Let’s see what we can do! I can’t do it! Don’t worry about it! I am rubbish at this Decide which method is most appropriate for you to use as you click through these phrases; ask the children to shout out ‘YEAH!’ or ‘NO!’, or ask volunteers to raise their hands to answer each one. Always try your best Tomorrow is another day This will get better Never give up!

5 Do you recognize this lady…?

6 J K Rowling J. K. Rowling had a really tough time before she became successful. She was depressed, had no money and no job. Her first Harry Potter book was rejected by the publisher. Did she give up? No. She bounced back! She sent it to lots of publishers but it was rejected again –12 times in total! She kept going, she worked hard to achieve her goal. Eventually, J. K. Rowling succeeded and is now one of the best selling authors of all time. Why? Because she didn’t give up! She bounced back! “It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all - in which case, you fail by default.” --- J.K. Rowling  Before you work through the slide, ask the children to raise their hands if they have heard of Harry Potter? Then ask the children to raise their hands if they like Harry Potter. Did you know that J. K. Rowling had a really tough time before she became successful. She was depressed, had no money and no job. But she was determined to achieve her goal of writing her first Harry Potter book. When it was finished, her book was rejected by the publisher. When it was finished, her book was rejected by the publisher. Did she give up? No. She bounced back! (Bounce your netball a few times to reinforce the point) She sent it to different publishers but faced more rejection –12 times in total! She kept going, she worked hard to achieve her goal. Her hard work paid off and J. K. Rowling went from being a jobless single mother living on benefits, to one of the best selling authors of all time. Why? Because she didn’t give up! She bounced back! (Bounce your netball a few times to reinforce the point) J. K. Rowling is now a billionaire authoress!!! The quote from J. K. Rowling at the end of the slide may not be age appropriate, so feel free to skip it.

7 Do you recognize this man?

8 Justin Bieber Justin Bieber became famous, all thanks to the internet.
Lots of people were really mean to him! Did he give up? No. He ‘beliebed’ in himself! The bullying continued. People spread lies and rumours about him, and hacking all his videos on YouTube. Every mistake he made (and yes, there were a few), was plastered all over the press. Did he give up? No. He ‘beliebed’ in himself! He got back up every time he was knocked down. We’ve added a little humour here with ‘beliebing’ in yourself, make sure you emphasise the word  Justin Bieber was discovered on the internet at the age of 12 when his Mum started posting videos online of him singing. He quickly became famous, all thanks to the internet. But lots of people and groups were really, really mean to him on the internet, saying how rubbish he was and even that they wanted him dead! Did he give up? No. He ‘beliebed’ in himself! The online groups got worse, spreading lies and rumours about him, and hacking all his videos on YouTube. Every mistake he made (and yes, there were a few), was plastered all over the press. Did he give up? No. He ‘beliebed’ in himself! He got back up every time he was knocked down. (bounce the ball a few times here to reinforce the point).

9 Resilience That’s not to say that by simply being resilient, we will become rich and famous like J. K. Rowling or Justin Bieber. It wasn’t always easy for them. It’s just that we only see the good bits, not all the hard work and determination that has gone before…. That’s not to say that by simply being resilient, we will become rich and famous like J. K. Rowling or Justin Bieber. Just because they are famous and successful now doesn’t mean it was always easy for them. These are examples of famous people who had a really tough time before they became successful, it’s just that we only see the good bits, not all the hard work and determination that has gone before….

10 We only see the good bits….
Like these two carrots… Things are not always as they seem.

11 Bouncing back when things go wrong.
Resilience is… Bouncing back when things go wrong. Recognising your strengths/talents. Not worrying about what other people think. Being able to handle tricky situations. Staying positive. Beliebing in yourself. Always trying your best. NEVER GIVING UP! We’ve added a little humour here again with ‘beliebing’ in yourself, make sure you emphasise the word 
