1 Progress in Cockpit-based Dissemination/Display
2003 Friends/Partners in Aviation Weather Forum Orlando, FL October 8, 2002 Gus Martzaklis NASA John H. Glenn Research at Lewis Field

2 NASA Aviation Weather Safety
Objective: Improve pilots’ ability to obtain, understand and use weather information for safer decision-making Challenges: Improve access/dissemination of weather information Improve user interface Fully utilize on-board and data-linked weather sources Improve weather situational awareness and decision-making Research Thrusts: Weather Situational Awareness Weather Decision Aiding Weather Dissemination <<Information not data>>

3 Situational Awareness
Progress to-date: Completed special populations study Completed CoWS & WARP experiments Completed data collection for METAR depiction experiment Conducted 4 piloted simulation experiments with RTI & CAMI Completed 3 deployments for CoRRaL using NASA King Air Future Plans: Investigate trending of weather information (numerous tasks) NEXRAD looping (historical to current observation) Incorporate forecasting (NCWF) Assess COTS flight planning software capabilities for cockpit applicability Analyze judgment & piloting performance from CoWS & WARP Contract to study pilots’ use of GA AWIN systems Study image analysis techniques for detection of IMC Investigate presentation concepts for TAMDAR

4 Decision Aiding Progress to-date: Future Plans:
Implemented Aviation Hazard Awareness System (AHAS) in-flight weather analysis tool on NASA B-757 for FY03 piloted evaluation experiment Considers weather information along with mission & equipment profile Integrates on-board and data-linked weather information Future Plans: Conduct RTI simulator experiment on automatic decision-aiding Perform flight evaluation of AHAS with commercial pilots Integrate turbulence hazard display into AHAS and perform simulator experiment Assess via integrated flight deck experiment: AHAS display Radar display Aural Alerting

5 Dissemination Progress to-date: Future Plans:
Defined datalink architectures satisfying comm requirements Performed modeling & simulations to validate target architecture Performed initial experimental assessments of datalinks Selected target links for architecture validation: Domestic Air Transport: 1090ES, FISDL, VDL Mode 2 GA and Regionals: UAT International Ops: Inmarsat Swift64 Future Plans: Perform 1090ES, FISDL, UAT and VDLM2 technical modifications to support Perform laboratory and flight validation of individual datalinks Perform integrated flight validation with other technologies Displays (AHAS, turbulence display..) Weather products Sensors (turbulence radar, TAMDAR)
