1. a formal agreement between two or more countries with reference to peace, alliance, commerce, or other international relations. 2. the formal document embodying such an international agreement. 3. any agreement or compact.

End of WWI Russia withdrew from the war after the Russian Revolution. (1917) The Allies (France, United Kingdom, and U.S.) were victorious. The Treaty of Versailles was written at the end of the war. Germany was blamed for causing the war.

Points of the Treaty Germany was forced to sign a guilt clause.
They could only have a very small army. They could not have an air force. No tanks or artillery Navy could only have 6 small warships Germany had to pay large war reparations (pay for war damages). No draft Soldiers could only serve for 12 years Germany lost the Rhineland (land that was a buffer zone between them and France Germany lost all its territories and colonies. (P330)

Germany had to say they were to blame.
Germany could only have a small military. Germany had to pay back the other countries they destroyed. (reparations) Germany had to give up their colonies and some of the areas in Europe that belonged to them.

The treaty was meant to punish Germany severely.
They were trying to keep Germany from ever being able to start another war. Germany was humiliated. Germany was left defenseless. (Student example)

Again… the treaty’s goal was to punish Germany so harshly that they could not wage (start) war again.

What the treaty actually did…
The treaty humiliated Germany. Germany was left unable to defend itself against attack. People of Germany were angry and without hope. They looked for someone to restore their national pride and fix their economy.
