Initial design: November 2016  Second Iteration/Final Design: Jan/Feb 2017 Return to Table of Contents

7 Testing and Future Work

8 Test Results Sand Sand and Rock Mixture
Successfully completed 15 lbs for 15 sec. Max force 45 lbs Sand and Rock Mixture 60 lbs at 6 inches from top of auger. Max force for max depth

9 Improvements to the Tool – Forward Plan
More sturdy handles Double ratcheting capabilities Stronger material Lighter Reduce the number of parts Stronger tether points Try different auger sizes

10 Educational Outreach

11 Illinois Space Day Illinois Space Day (ISD) is an annual educational outreach event that is organized through the Illinois Space Society (ISS). The exhibits and presentations at ISD are intended for late elementary to middle school students and their parents. Around 275 people attended ISD 2016 (100 elementary, 150 middle school , 25 undergrad). Some exhibits at ISD are the orbital simulator, ping pong trash can, and ISS technical projects.

12 Plainfield Space Presentation
The Illinois Space Society organized presentations revolving around the topic of space. These students, already covering the solar system, were able to expand their knowledge of the solar system as well as learn about other projects scientists and engineers are currently working on (i.e. the Journey to Mars , SLS, James Webb, etc.). Around 100 third graders in attendance. Modeled the orbit of the planets with balloons and preset string orbits.

13 Engineering Open House
The University of Illinois’s College of Engineering hosts their annual open house every March. The Illinois Space Society Micro-g NExT team will be demonstrating the function of the ALMA Tool along with a poster about the timeline of the device. Almost 20,000 people (including families and students) come to learn about the latest projects being developed in the College of Engineering. Giving a 3-minute presentation over space as well as presenting any prototypes discuss the design of the previous and current Micro-g tools.

14 Other Outreach Events Little Sister’s Weekend Illinois Novaree
