Presentation on theme: "What is Force? Force = A push or pull on an object"— Presentation transcript:

1 What is Force? Force = A push or pull on an object
Forces cause motion. Many factors influence force. Start by asking students about pushing or pulling doors. Tie that into explaining what force is. Then, ask students what happens/changes when they exert force (“something goes into motion”). Ask them whether or not they can name some factors that can influence force and motion.

2 What is Speed? Speed = How fast something is going.
Speed = Distance / Time Bonus: What is the fastest speed in the universe? Ask students to think of examples of different forms of speed. Ask them how they feel when they run fast vs. slow. Answer to the bonus is light.

3 What is Velocity? Velocity = Speed + Direction
Change in velocity = Acceleration Give examples of acceleration, such as cars and roller coasters (when it suddenly speeds up or slows or stops). Explain, for example, that speed = a car going at 30 mph, but velocity = a car going at 30 mph North or something like that.

4 Relation to Forces? A force can change an object’s speed and velocity.
-Speed up or start moving -Slow down or stop moving -Change directions Provide example for your students, such as: “We can move a rock from one end of a table to the other by pushing it with our hands.” “The force is from the push from our hands.” “We can push it fast, slow, forwards, backwards.”
