1 Statewide Coverage/ ICADV Program Council Agencies
11/29/201811/29/2018 Statewide Coverage/ ICADV Program Council Agencies County Catchment Map The Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence has over 50 member programs throughout the state. There are 102 counties in Illinois. Over two thirds of the domestic violence programs in Illinois serve more than one county. In rural parts of the state a domestic violence program might serve up to nine counties. 11/29/2018 New Director Presentation—Fall 2012

2 11/29/201811/29/2018 Catchment Areas You have all been provided a copy of this map in your new member orientation packet. This provides an organized dissection of Illinois that shows ICADV member programs’ catchment area for serving clients. In some cases programs might informally split a county depending on what is best for the client. These catchment areas naturally evolved over time, based on programs’ capacity and/or victims needs. They were not assigned. As a new director it is important to reach out to program directors near you, both in times of need and for mutual general support. Networking within your region is highly recommended. 11/29/2018 New Director Presentation—Fall 2012

3 11/29/201811/29/2018 Catchment Areas Another way to quickly locate programs through out Illinois is through the Coalition’s website. The web address is: Towards the top of the home page is the link “Get Help Now” , a drop down with “Resources in Illinois” appears, slide your mouse over this and then “Victim Services” appears—click on that. You will then see a map of Illinois. 11/29/2018 New Director Presentation—Fall 2012

4 Catchment Areas 2. 1. 11/29/201811/29/2018 You have 2 choices:
1. Clicking on any county within the Illinois map will provide a list of all the domestic violence programs serving that county. In my opinion, this choice is the most efficient way of finding domestic violence programs in Illinois quickly. Or 2. Click on the drop down menu and search by city to find the available domestic violence program that serves that community. (please note that not all cities are located in this drop down menu.) 11/29/2018 New Director Presentation—Fall 2012

5 11/29/201811/29/2018 Catchment Areas These results were provided after clicking on “Will” county on the Illinois map. You can see there are 2 domestic violence programs that serve that county. 11/29/2018 New Director Presentation—Fall 2012

6 Being A Culturally Conscious Program
11/29/201811/29/2018 Being A Culturally Conscious Program As a new Director you have a responsibility to make sure that staff and clients of different ethnicities, cultures and non-traditional faiths are approached with an open mind and acceptance of difference. We all bring different life experiences to our work, that impacts our beliefs, and often times our judgement of others who are outside of what we consider “normal” 11/29/2018 New Director Presentation—Fall 2012

7 Being A Culturally Conscious Program
11/29/201811/29/2018 Being A Culturally Conscious Program ICADV’s Women of Color committee created this educational document to assist advocates when working with clients who are of different ethnicities, cultures or faith communities. “Different”, being defined here, as what falls outside of what is considered the “Norm” by either the advocate or the program. In many circumstances, domestic violence programs are unsure of how to work with these populations. By asking some or all of the questions listed in this document, you can help to ensure a more welcoming and safer environment for the victim. The second page provides state and national resources, as well as space to include additional resources within your own community. This document has been included in your new member orientation packet. 11/29/2018 New Director Presentation—Fall 2012

8 Being A Culturally Conscious Program
11/29/201811/29/2018 Being A Culturally Conscious Program Your Program—Your Role “It's natural to want a cookbook approach to diversity issues so that one knows exactly what to do. Unfortunately, given the many dimensions of diversity, there is no easy recipe to follow. Advice and strategies given for one situation may not work given the same situation in another context.” You have a key role in transforming the organizational culture so that it more closely reflects the values of our diverse workforce. Do you have: an understanding and acceptance of managing diversity concepts? a recognition that diversity is threaded through every aspect of management? self-awareness, in terms of understanding your own culture, identity, biases, prejudices, and stereotypes? the willingness to challenge and change institutional practices that present barriers to different groups? 11/29/2018 New Director Presentation—Fall 2012

9 Being A Culturally Conscious Program
11/29/201811/29/2018 Being A Culturally Conscious Program Support… Is just a phone call away. (This 800 number is for domestic violence member program staff only) Never forget the diversity of the Coalition as a whole. There are many resources within our own membership. Take advantage of this and if you need help getting started, call the administrative office, we are here to assist in whatever way we can. 11/29/2018 New Director Presentation—Fall 2012
