1 TGaq Design Options Date: 2013-01-14 Authors: January 2013
doc.: IEEE /0057r0 January 2013 TGaq Design Options Date: Authors: Stephen McCann, RIM Stephen McCann, RIM

2 January 2013 doc.: IEEE /0057r0 January 2013 Abstract Thoughts about Design Options for the TGaq meeting in January 2013, Vancouver, British Colombia, Canada Stephen McCann, RIM Stephen McCann, RIM

3 Need for Project (From PAR)
January 2013 doc.: IEEE /0057r0 January 2013 Need for Project (From PAR) This amendment will provide mechanisms that assist in pre-association discovery of services by addressing the means to advertise their existence and enable delivery of information that describes them. This information about services is to be made available prior to association by stations operating on IEEE wireless networks. There are existing higher layer service discovery/description approaches (e.g. UPnP, Bonjour) as well as mechanisms to deliver information in pre-association states (e.g. just as ANQP can be delivered over GAS). Stephen McCann, RIM Stephen McCann, RIM

4 Way Forward What do we want to do? Use Case/Requirements analysis
January 2013 doc.: IEEE /0057r0 January 2013 Way Forward What do we want to do? Use Case/Requirements analysis Call for proposed solutions (complete/partial) Down selection criteria (if multiple proposals) Simple Protocol (quick) Communication plan with other Fora (e.g. Wi-Fi Alliance?) Stephen McCann, RIM Stephen McCann, RIM

5 Quick Option TGaq develops simple MAC protocol
January 2012 doc.: IEEE /0057r0 January 2013 Quick Option TGaq develops simple MAC protocol Meets low level requirements of use cases Other Fora deal with higher layers (L2+) Liaison to other fora of our use cases Stephen McCann, RIM Michael Montemurro, RIM

6 What’s wrong with GAS ? Initial look at GAS
January 2012 doc.: IEEE /0057r0 January 2013 What’s wrong with GAS ? Initial look at GAS What are the gaps for TGaq Can it be re-used What is best for industry Go back and look at probe request/public action frames Can we develop something else that looks like GAS ? Stephen McCann, RIM Michael Montemurro, RIM

7 What’s wrong with ANQP ? If GAS is ok, then Initial look at ANQP
January 2012 doc.: IEEE /0057r0 January 2013 What’s wrong with ANQP ? If GAS is ok, then Initial look at ANQP What are the gaps for TGaq Can it be re-used What is best for industry Go back and look at probe request/public action frames Can we develop something else that looks like ANQP (re: RLQP in TGaf)? Stephen McCann, RIM Michael Montemurro, RIM

9 What’s wrong with ANQP Make GAS truly bi-directional
January 2012 doc.: IEEE /0057r0 January 2013 What’s wrong with ANQP Make GAS truly bi-directional Need something more than an advertisement protocol. Do we need request/response mechanism? Transaction Protocol? Broadcast GAS responses New “ANQP” protocol to carry UPnP, Bonjour frames Do we have to determine which frames would be required? Stephen McCann, RIM Michael Montemurro, RIM

10 Protocol Ideas Some simple new service discovery messages
January 2012 doc.: IEEE /0057r0 January 2013 Protocol Ideas Some simple new service discovery messages Upper layer encapsulation Return Codes Signed (secure) messages? Stephen McCann, RIM Michael Montemurro, RIM
