Cloning Do YOU have a twin?

Twins Identical Twins are natural clones. They contain identical genetic coding. They may not always appear identical because of environmental factors.

Identical Twins After fertilization, the identical cells are separated and form into two individuals. This can be done in the lab and is called artificial embryo twinning.

Asexual Reproduction Bacteria, yeast, plants and a few animals may reproduce asexually. The offspring are genetic clones.

Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer
We can produce clones in the lab by taking a body (somatic) cell from an adult, inserting it into an empty egg and inserting it into a surrogate mother.

Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer

Cloning Essentially, an identical twin of the cloned individual is born in a different time/environment. Many animals have been successfully cloned: mice, dogs, cats, frogs, sheep Human cloning is unethical and illegal.

Stem Cells Stem cells are cells that are undifferentiated- they have not been assigned an identity/job. Diseases/damaged tissues may be treated with them

Stem Cells

Examples Regrow body parts Repair damaged brain/nervous tissue
Bone marrow treatment for leukemia Cancer treatments
