Igneous Rocks Igneous rocks are made either underground (intrusive) or above ground (extrusive). At the surface, lava hardens to form extrusive rocks with tiny (fine-grained) crystals or glassy (no crystal) textures. Beneath the surface, magma hardens to form intrusive rocks with easily visible (coarse-grained) crystal texture. 11/29/2018 Template copyright

Igneous Rocks Light colored rocks are felsic rocks because they are basically made up of feldspar and silicon. Dark colored rocks are mafic rocks because they are made up of magnesium and ferrum 11/29/2018 Template copyright

Metamorphic Rocks Formed by heat and pressure changing existing rocks. Regional metamorphism affects a large area and results from plate tectonics. Contact metamorphism affects rocks on a local scale, such as “baking” sedimentary rocks next to magma or lava. 11/29/2018 Template copyright

Metamorphic Rocks Non-Foliated – mineral grains are not arranged in plains or bands. Foliated - contain aligned grains of flat minerals. 11/29/2018 Template copyright
