1 North Assessment and Grading Guidelines
Discovery

2 Introduction What is the purpose of grades?
What is the purpose of assessment? Good opportunity for a student engagement activity: -Think-pair-share -Write answers on post-its and then categorize them on the board

3 Learning Target I will have a better understanding of grading and assessment at North Middle School.

4 Purpose of Grades From a student’s point of view, rank these in order of importance and be prepared to explain your reasoning: Record keeping Measure learning Accountability Motivation Good opportunity for a student engagement strategy: -Four corners…ask students to get up and move to a corner of the room which represents the item they ranked as number 1. Students can speak with their respective groups and come up with a collective answer to share with the class. Ask if students want to change their “corner” after each group presents. To extend the activity, students can then move to the corner of the room which represents the one that they ranked the lowest and the activity can be repeated again. Use the rubber beach ball as “the talking ball.” so the person holding the ball has the floor and everyone else is responsible for active listening.
