1 Go through and highlight important information.
What is the definition of a Natural Hazard? A natural hazard is a natural event such as an earthquake, volcanic eruption, tropical storm or flood that poses risk of death, injury or damage to people and property. Geological Hazards – these are caused by land and tectonic processes. Atmospheric Hazards – these are caused by changes in weather and climate. Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, avalanches, mudflows and tsunamis. Tropical storms, hurricanes, tornadoes, rain, drought and flooding. What factors affect Hazard Risk? Urbanisation – Over 50% of world’s population now live in cities. For examples Tokyo and Los Angeles are at risk from earthquakes. Poverty – In poorer parts of the world poverty may force people to live at risk. In Caracas, Venezuela, a shortage of housing had led to people building on unstable slopes prone to floods and landslides. Homework Go through and highlight important information. Produce a revision card on the outline. Answer the Exam question Magnitude is one way that affects hazard risk. The stronger the hazard the more the risk. For example an earthquake with a magnitude of 9 is much stronger than one that is a 5 so there is likely to be more deaths and damage. Frequency is another factor that affects hazard risk. Some areas of the world are more prone to natural hazards than others. For example Japan has around 7,000 earthquakes a year whereas the UK will only receive the odd one which most do not feel. This means there is greater risk for people in Japan.
