8 RETS enables Interoperability
RETS Introduction RETS enables Interoperability 11/29/2018 . . . Client #1 Client #2 Client #3 Client #4 Client #n The world started with each MLS software vendor offering specific client software that was linked to the vendor’s server solution The restriction or problem is that every Realtor must make use of the one and only solution for their desktop Since different Realtors have different priorities, different levels of skill/expertise with technology, one size really does not fit all RETS enables interoperability Now a Realtor can choose from among the products of various 3rd party software vendors that are available for his or her particular MLS Perhaps equally important, the software of a 3rd party software vendors is now appealing to more MLSs, increasing the potential market for the 3rd party software vendors The effect of the the larger market should be to control license price for the Realtor while increasing revenue and profitability for 3rd party software vendors . . . Server #1 Server #2 Server #3 Server #4 Server #n RETS enables client choice Corvelle & Focus Forward

10 Evolution of Standards
RETS Introduction Evolution of Standards 11/29/2018 Story: Standards live forever The widely-employed Standard railroad gauge (distance between the rails) is 4 feet, 8.5 inches. That's an exceedingly odd number. Why was that gauge used in much of the world? Because that's the way railroads were built in England, and the many railroads were built by English expatriates. Why did the English engineers build railroads like that? Because the first rail lines were built by the same people who built the pre-railroad horse drawn tramways, and that's the gauge they used. Why did the tramways use that gauge then? Because the people who built the tramways used the same jigs and tools that they used for building wagons, which used that wheel spacing. Okay! Why did the wagons use that odd wheel spacing? Well, if they tried to use any other spacing the wagons would break on many of the old, long distance roads, because that's the spacing of the old wheel ruts. So who built these old rutted roads? The first long distance roads in Europe were built by Imperial Rome for the benefit of their legions. The roads have been used ever since. And the ruts? The initial ruts, which everyone else had to match for fear of destroying their wagons, were first made by Roman war chariots. Since the chariots were made for or by Imperial Rome they were all alike in the matter of wheel spacing. Thus, we have the answer to the original questions. The United States standard railroad gauge of 4 feet, 8.5 inches derives from the original specification for an Imperial Roman army war chariot. Specs and bureaucracies live forever. Why were the Roman army war chariot 4 feet, 8.5 inches wide? Because the Imperial Roman chariots were made to be just wide enough to accommodate the back-ends of two war horses.
