1. In 1986, Mr. Velayudham started the orphanage with five disabled orphaned children. With time he was able to accommodate more children. The orphanage currently takes care of 86 children in a rented house in the heart of Chennai.

4. Basic Fact Sheet Seva Chakkara is home to about 100 children
It runs a primary school for children in classes I-V. Children go to local schools from class VI and continue to live at the orphanage.
All the needs of the children including food, shelter, clothing, healthcare, education is taken care of by the orphanage.
The orphanage also provides vocational skills on a case to case basis.

5. Changes catalyzed by Asha
Asha has helped in the purchase of living quarters for the children.
Support-A-Child program run by Asha sustains many of the basic running expenses.
Teaching aids are being used, which give better understanding of the topics to the children.
Additional teachers were hired so that one teacher does not have to take more than one class.
Asha volunteers in Chennai are working towards improving the quality of education at the orphanage.

6. How Asha worked with Seva Chakkara
Asha’s initial involvement with the orphanage was limited to improving just the primary school at the orphanage.
With time, Asha took up a larger responsibility with the orphanage. Asha started a Support-A-Child program for sustained funding of basic requirements of the children.
Asha volunteers have been actively involved in helping Seva Chakkara purchase living quarters.

9. Home for Seva Chakkara Orphanage
The orphanage provides security and a home to around 100 children but did not have permanent accomodation.
The current rented quarters is convenient and available for purchase.
Funds required for the purchase of the building is $80,000.
Funds raised by volunteers of Asha for Education so far is around $71,000.
Seva Chakkara recently purchased a building.
