1 What is static electricity?
Write the yellow text only!

2 Learning Goals I will be able to explain the law of electric charges.
I will be able to explain static electricity. I will be able to distinguish between conductors and insulators.

3 Recall All matter is made up of atoms:
Protons – positive charge in nucleus Neutrons – neutral charge in nucleus Electrons – negative charge around nucleus

4 Electric Charge If an atom has imbalance of electrons and protons it is said to have an electrical charge Positive objects have fewer electrons than protons Negative objects have more electrons than protons

5 Law of Electric Charges
Like charges will repel Unlike charge will attract

6 Static Electricity An imbalance of electric charge on the surface of an object Balloon demo Hair becomes positive Balloon is negative The wall is neutral

7 Ways to Check Charges Electroscope – a piece of equipment used to detect electrical charges Pith‐Ball Electroscope Metal Leaf Electroscope

8 Conductors and Insulators
Recall from Chemistry: Conductors will allow heat and electricity to flow through them – METALS Insulators will not allow electricity to flow through them – NON‐METALS ƒ Grounding – the process of sending electricity to the Earth (through the 3rd prong in a plug)

9 Learning Goals Revisited
I will be able to explain the law of electric charges. I will be able to explain static electricity. I will be able to distinguish between conductors and insulators.

10 Your Turn Bill Nye Static Electricity Text p 471 #2-7.
