1 Fluency

2 OVERVIEW OF FLUENCY When a child is fluent in their reading they are able to comprehend the reading passage quickly, accurately, and with expression. Fluent readers don’t have to concentrate on decoding the actual words. They are able to focus their attention on what the text actually means.

3 WHY IS FLUENCY IMPORTANT?
“Fluency provides a bridge between word recognition and comprehension.” -National Institute for Literacy (NIFL), 2001, p. 22 Fluent readers are able to focus their attention on understanding text. Because non-fluent readers focus much of their attention on figuring out words, they have less attention to devote to comprehension.

4 STRATEGIES TO HELP IMPROVE FLUENCY
Use a pencil to track.  Read out loud at least one page a day. Explain any errors: Saying a word incorrectly Repeating a word Adding words that are not there.

5 COUNTING WORDS PER MINUTE

6 CIL April Fluency Goals: 3rd: 132 wpm 4th & 5th : 140wpm

7 R.A.C.E What does this stand for? Why do we use it?
How does it make us better readers?

8 The acronym R.A.C.E is used to help our students remember to answer questions in complete sentences and to the best of their ability. The answer is not just YES! You got it right! We want to challenge our students to show how they know something by providing evidence and to able to explain their thinking.

9 See the difference? Question: Which of the 3 little pigs was able to build a sturdy house and why?
The third little pig was able to build a sturdy house because he built it out of bricks so the wolf could not blow it down. I know this because on page 12 it states, “the wolf couldn’t move this house, it was made of bricks.” This tells me that the 3rd little pig built the strongest house out of bricks and the wolf could not blow it down. the 3rd one Vs.

10 3rd Grade Expectation Question: Which of the 3 little pigs was able to build a sturdy house and why? RACE The third little pig was able to build a sturdy house because he built it out of bricks so the wolf could not blow it down. I know this because on page 12 it states “ the wolf couldn’t move this house, it was made of bricks.” This tells me that the third little pig built the strongest house out of bricks and the wolf could not blow it down.

11 5th Grade Expectation Question: Which of the 3 little pigs was able to build a sturdy house and why? RACE Of the three little pigs, the third little pig was able to build a sturdy house because he chose the best material and built it out of bricks so the wolf could not blow it down. I know this because on page 12 it states, “ the wolf couldn’t move this house, it was made of bricks.” I can also observe in the illustrations on pages 10 and 11 the wolf blowing down the straw house and the stick house. On page 12 I can see that the wolf is not successfully blowing down the house made of bricks. This evidence tells me that the third little pig built the strongest house out of bricks, the most sturdy material, and the wolf could not blow it down unlike the other two pigs who built their houses out of straw and sticks which were not sturdy.
