Biography Sunny Ade told his parent when he was growing up that he gained admission into a University in another state (University of Lagos) in Nigeria, but he pursued his musical carrier in Lagos instead. King Sunny Ade started his music career with a popular Yoruba highlife band musician, Moses Olaiya (Known as Baba Sala) but he later started his own band formerly known as “The Green Spots” in 1967 but the band is called “Golden Mercury” today.

Awards Sunny Ade is a well-known Juju artist in Yoruba music of Nigeria, also in Africa. Apart from his success and popularity in Africa, he travelled to Europe and America for his Music Tour in 1982, and he received a Grammy nomination for one of his songs “Syncro System” as ethnic music category and also in 1998 he received another Grammy nomination for “Odu” “which makes him the first musician to be nominated twice for Grammy. The New York Times described Ade “as one of the world greatest band leader”. In 2009 Ade was included in Afro Pop Hall of Fame, which was held at Brooklyn in New York, and King Sunny Ade, dedicated this award to Michael Jackson.

Music - Syncro System Sycro System is Juju music which was sang by King Sunny Ade in This music is music of all times. Sycro System had some unique instrumental beats that gave the song a different outcome. The song was produced by Martin Meissonnier and it was labeled by Mango Records.

Music - Syncro System This music peaked number 91 on the pop chart for Billboard. Even though I was very young when the music was produced I could felt the wonderful beat of the instruments by the instrumentalist. Part of the “instrument used was the steel guitar” which was developed in Hawaii around 19th and 20th century.

Music - Syncro System Also the voice of the singer (King Sunny Ade) was unique and well played. I have no doubt that the song was nominated at the Grammy award. Sychro system contained “ewi”, which is the traditional singing poetic lyric in Yoruba culture. The music was not to slow or fast but it was sung well.

Listening Guide The Intro started with the voice of the lead vocalist (King Sunny Ade) without any instrument. Immediately after that the instrumentalist continued with the use of instruments. At every beats the sound of the Shekere was so great and flawless. Then the piano gave a very unique sound which matches voice of the leader followed by the Conga.

Listening Guide The drumming and the sound of the Conga gave a sweet melody at every 2 beats, and the drumming swept of the feet of the dancers. The song was not a fast song, neither slow, but one can feel the sensation of the instruments which gathered the sweetness of the music.

Listening Guide For the first three minutes the only person singing was the lead vocalist, and the he was backed up by the sound of keyboard and the Agogo, which was has a noisy sound in a good way. After three minutes the backing vocalist voices enter into the music by singing the chorus to back up the leader with 16 measures.

Listening Guide The drummer added some melody to the rhythm of the music which enters at every eight beats. What amazed me was the way the drummer who was using the talking drum and at the same time the sound rhyme with the music and the voice of the leader.

Listening Guide The drum was not always heard and at the same time it was as if I was hearing the drum sound during every beat of the music. At about five minutes of listening to the music the piano gave a wonderful tone that lasted about few seconds.

Listening Guide The sound of the piano overshadowed all other instruments even when they are still playing. This act of the piano gave the music another beautiful end of sensation. Even while other instruments were on, the piano sounded as if the music has been changed to a different music and yet the music returned back to the same beat without any utterance or disorganization, which was flawless.

Listening Guide The humming of the band members during the music added some beats that rhyme with all the instruments been played. Another fascinating sound was the bass sound which added another firm sound to the background of the music. The verse was sung beautifully by the backing vocalist of the band, and their vocal sound amazing, also the Agogo instruments which was added, gave their voices a unique trend. Steel guitar was another wonderful instrument that was used in Syncro System and it was played by Ademola Adepoju.

Listening Guide At the end, all the instruments used sounded very well and the vocalist just stops to end the music. This is a very beautiful international music, and from the beginning to the end there was no dull moment.
