3. Elvira Ramírez  was born in 934, was the daughter of Ramiro II of León and Urraca Sánchez, and sister of the Kings Ordoño III and Sancho I.

4. At the age of twelve she became a nun in the monastery of San Salvador
At the age of twelve she became a nun in the monastery of San Salvador. Elvira was close to her home because her father built the building, with a cemetery for the royal pantheon included, attached to his palace.

5. The church of San Salvador, the oldest church in the city, was a part of the monastery that Ramiro II de León raised for his daughter, who entered it as an abbess nun.

6. When Sancho I died Queen Elvira inherited the authority of her father Ramiro II. Elvira acted as regent during the first years of the reign of his nephew Ramiro III who was proclaimed king at the age of five.

7. Elvira acted energetically because she had to face a period of instability. First of all she ratified the peace treaty with al-Hakam II that Sancho I did not want to sign.

8. Between 966 and 968 she had to fight against Viking incursions, led by Gunderedo, in the Arosa estuary. In that battle she counted on the help of the Galician Count Gonzalo Sánchez. He killed Gunderedo and defeated to the Nordic hosts

Then, two nobiliary parties were formed. Elvira Ramirez headed one of those parties while the other was headed by Teresa Ansúrez. The first group exerted the power until the defeat in San Esteban de Gormaz in the year 975.

10. The regency of the kingdom then passed into the hands of her sister-in-law Queen Teresa de Ansúrez, who after widowed professed in the monastery of San Pelayo of Oviedo where she became an abbess.

11. Elvira Ramirez died in the year 986 at the age of 52 years.
