4 Rules on faith-based organisations
From our trustees’ handbook: “You do not fund churches or other religious bodies where the monies will be used for religious purposes” So… Need to see wider community benefit Evidence that restrictions don’t breach the Equalities Act

5 Applications Online form Read the Guidelines!!
Then read them again...!! See what is said – not what you want to hear! Talk to us for clarification if needs be (but not to ‘run some ideas by you’)

6 Applications Make sure you have the right form!
Stick to the format provided Answer all the questions (read all the guidance) Provide all supplementary information requested (we use it all)

7 More on applications Be specific about: What you want to achieve
How you will do that How you will measure your achievement How your project meets the funder’s priorities If it is to continue existing or previous work then don’t be afraid to talk about it!

8 Explain your aims, objectives, intended outputs and outcomes
At application stage Explain your aims, objectives, intended outputs and outcomes If you have already delivered this work (or similar), what difference did this make? (i.e. outcomes) How will you monitor and evaluate the project?

9 Telling a clear story… This is what we want to change
This is what we plan to do This is what we have done This is what has changed as a result of our work Aims Objectives Outputs Outcomes

10 Use plain English please!
Actual quotes: “..deepened understanding of interface between issues of freedom of expression/offence and young people’s ideas...” “..X’s management has a history of intelligence based resource targeting and monitoring/evaluation of outcomes to improve performance in mission critical areas of public safety and service...” Gasp!

11 For any grant, we want to know…
Has the work met its objectives ? What outputs and outcomes have been delivered? How many service users have benefited? What do users say? Did anything unexpected happen? What did you learn? Was this a good model? How could things have gone better?

12 What difference has our money made? Has the work met our objectives?
This helps us assess… What difference has our money made? Has the work met our objectives? What can we learn from our grant?

13 Final tips Set out the costs clearly and in full
Get someone else to read it as a “fresh eye” Make sure you include all of the added info requested Make sure it’s signed & by the right person Apply in good time
