On December 9, 1531, he started early to walk 15 miles for daily Mass in Mexico City. As he passed Tepeyac Hill, he heard music and was called to the hilltop by a woman’s voice. At the top of the hill, he saw a beautiful woman dressed as an Aztec princess. The woman said that she was the Virgin Mary and asked that the bishop build a church on that site so she might “give my love, compassion, help, and defense, for I am your most devoted mother”. The bishop was skeptical and requested proof of the Lady’s identity. On the day that Mary promised that Juan Diego would receive a sign, Juan was looking for a priest for his dying uncle. The Lady appeared to Juan, assured him that his uncle had been healed, and told him that he would find what the bishop asked for at the top of Tepeyac Hill. Juan found the hill summit covered with beautiful flowers growing in frozen soil. He cut the flowers, and the Lady helped arrange them within his coarse cloak, known as a tilma, and sent him to the bishop. When Juan unfolded his tilma, the image of Our Lady appeared on the fabric, and the flowers were Castilian roses, not grown in Mexico. The bishop wept and asked forgiveness for doubting – and he built an adobe structure on Tepeyac Hill to honor the Blessed Mother. St. Juan Diego died in 1548 at the age of 74. He was canonized in 2002 by Pope John Paul II. STEWARDSHIP November 25 – November 26, 2017 Holy Rosary $ St. Rita $ St. John $ St. Francis $ May God bless you for your generosity.
