1 Introduction to Common Core State Standards for Mathematics
Goals Goal 1: Understand the overall goals of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. Goal 2: Understand the eight Standards of Mathematical Practice that span grade levels Goal 3: Understand the structure and progression of the standards across grades and domains Goal 4: Understand the specific language used in the standards Goal 5: Develop the ability to analyze and categorize a task as demonstrating a certain standard(s) Goal 6: Become aware of resources available to help understand and implement the CCSM Each goal will be discussed with explicit connections to student performance. It is important for all of us to not just hear words but gain a clear picture of how these standards might look in the classroom and what implications they have for instruction. 2 Properties of Multiplication
3.0A.5 Apply properties of operations as strategies to multiply and divide. Commutative property of multiplication, Associative property of multiplication, Distributive Property Students are ready to develop or use strategies which help them build understanding of the mathematics. Post the student work card. Show slide. Draw out the property and mathematical understandings in the work. ( distributive property which relies on decomposition). It is extremely important for the teacher to explicitly link the array drawing to the recording of an algorithm. This is seen in the student work sample. This young student drew a line to show how she split the array into facts she knew ( 3*6) then recorded the multiplication sentences beside the array. This clear link between the array and the equation builds strong math understanding of multiplication as well as providing a visual to encourage math conversation. Understanding needs both the visual and the conversation. Pause to allow participants to reflect on the developmental story so far. Ask, what they find different in this progression of standards. Ask, how they believe implementing this progression will impact instruction. c-TAP Elementary Toolkit

3 Multiplication Standards
3.OA.7 Fluently multiply and divide within 100, using strategies such as the relationship between multiplica-tion and division or properties of operations. By the end of Grade 3, know from memory all products of two one-digit numbers. This student’s work continues the previous line of thinking but omits the drawing thus moving this student closer to abstraction. Post the student work card. c-TAP Elementary Toolkit

Standard Algorithm 5.NBT.5 Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm. The standard algorithm comes after a student has understanding of the meaning of multiplication and strategies that the student understands. This will make it easier for the student to understand what is happening in the common algorithm. c-TAP Elementary Toolkit
