1 The resurrection of Jesus
- Meaning and significance

2 The key events as recorded in Luke:

3 Meaning and significance
You’ve read the chapter from John Drane about three meanings of the resurrection. Without using your notes, fill in the sheet with points you can remember Swap with your friend and read their notes. Use green pen to add to your own. Do the same with another friend.

4 How important is the resurrection?
Whereas the gospels were written decades later, Paul’s letters to the Corinthians have been dated to within 5 years of Jesus’ death. He writes: “And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith.” (1 Cor 15:14)

5 How important is the resurrection?
“3 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas, and then to the Twelve.” So, only a couple of years after Jesus’ death, the resurrection was “of first importance” to the early Church and was the key message being spread by his followers.

6 The resurrection and Jesus’ identity
If he hadn’t risen from the dead, who would he be? People claimed he was the messiah and the son of God. People claimed he had performed miracles. He went around preaching and had a large group of loyal followers. Who does that sound like?

7 The resurrection and Jesus’ identity
So, what does the resurrection show? Why was it so important to the early Christians? Write a paragraph to explain this meaning. Make as many synoptic links as you can.

8 The resurrection and new life
1. In his letter to the Galatians, Paul writes that because of the resurrection: “It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me” He was teaching the first Christians that their whole life is different because of Jesus’ resurrection – they now have a new life.

9 The resurrection and new life
Can you link this to the KoG? 2. In this new life, all of Jesus’ promises can come true – especially those of the Kingdom of God: Death is overcome by new life, evil is overcome by righteousness, and anyone can attain eternal life with God. 3. Jesus’ death and new life is symbolic of what Christians need to do: end their old life and start a new, better life with God. 4. It is also symbolic of God’s new relationship with people…

1. What is meant by “substitutionary atonement”? 2. How does this link with the idea of “new life”? 2. How does it link with John’s Prologue? VIDEO

15 The resurrection and future hope
Death is not the end. “ But if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? ” (St Paul again) Jesus overcame sin and death. So, Jesus has demonstrated to Christians that suffering and death are no longer a problem – anyone can have eternal life with him in the Kingdom of God. Can you link this to John’s Prologue? And to Luke’s KoG?
