1. Character Quotes
Find quotes from chapter 3 that suggest something about the characters. You may use quotes, but only quotes that indirectly suggest something. For example, do not use as an example for Lenny a quote from George saying “He’s not crazy.” That is just George stating his opinion. Be able to explain what the quote says about the character.

2. Lennie
“Lennie, who had been watching, imitated George exactly. He pushed himself back, drew up his knees, embraced them, looked over to George to see whether he had it just right. He pulled his hat down a little more over his eyes, the way George’s hat was.”
This shows Lennie acting as a little kid. He seems to look up to George and wants to imitate him, as if whatever George is doing is the right way to do something, and Lennie is trying to do the right thing. This suggests the relationship between Lennie and George is like that of a younger brother to an older brother.

3. George
“Whatever we ain’t got, that’s what you want. God a’mighty, if I was alone I could live so easy. I could go get a job an’ work, an’ no trouble. No mess at all, and when the end of the month come I could take my fifty bucks and go into town and get whatever I want. Why, I could stay in a cat house all night. I could eat any place I want, hotel or any place, and order any damn thing I could think of. An’ I could do all that every damn month. Get a gallon of whisky, or set in a pool room and play cards or shoot pool.” Lennie knelt and looked over the fire at the angry George. And Lennie’s face was drawn with terror. “An’ whatta I got,” George went on furiously. “I got you! You can’t keep a job and you lose me ever’ job I get. Jus’ keep me shovin’ all over the country all the time. An’ that ain’t the worst. You get in trouble. You do bad things and I got to get you out.” His voice rose nearly to a shout. “You crazy son-of-a-bitch. You keep me in hot water all the time.”

4. George
With terms like “angry,” “furiously,” and “rose nearly to a shout,” this passage suggests a level of frustration that George feels about Lennie. George is obviously upset with Lennie, talking about all the bad things Lennie does and all the great things George could do if only he could walk away from Lennie. And yet later, when Lennie offers to run away in a cave, George says “I been mean, ain’t I?” and “I want you to stay with me.” This suggests that although George is frustrated with Lennie’s behavior, he also likes Lennie and doesn’t want to get rid of him. For whatever reason, despite the trouble Lennie costs George, George still wants Lennie as company.
