1 Review – Therapy

2 COGNITIVE THERAPY Broad category of therapy which aims to change to way a person views life and unpleasant situations.

3 BIOLOGICAL TREATMENT Broad category of therapy which includes medication, psychosurgery, and electroconvulsive therapy.

4 BEHAVIOR THERAPY Broad category of therapy that seeks to change a person’s actions in an attempt to bring about more positive feelings and emotions

5 INSIGHT THERAPY Broad category of therapy in which the goal is to give clients a better awareness and understanding of their feelings

6 GROUP THERAPY Broad category of therapy which seeks to provide social support and reduce the cost of traditional therapy.

7 Rational Emotive Therapy
Type of therapy used when clients are directed to change their “irrational” views of themselves.

8 Electroconvulsive Therapy
Electric currents are briefly sent throughout the brain to reduce symptoms of depression, schizophrenia, etc.

9 Free Association Freud’s technique – allowing a client to openly discuss whatever comes to mind

Psychosurgery Brain surgery performed to change a person’s behavior and emotional state. (Can include removal or lesioning)

11 Stress Inoculation Therapy
Teaches people a pattern of “self-talk” that allows them to defeat stressful situations

12 Modeling When a person learns a new behavior by watching others perform the behavior

13 Gestalt Therapy Designed to make people more aware of their feelings and making them “whole and complete”

14 Client-Centered Therapy
Identified by Carl Rogers – the idea that therapy should focus on the client’s point of view, not the therapist’s or the world’s view.

15 Beck’s Cognitive Therapy
Similar to Rational Emotive Therapy, it seeks to lead clients to have a more realistic and less critical view of oneself. (Focus on depression)

16 Systematic Desensitization
Gradually reducing irrational fears step by step

17 Transference Assumption that the client transfers feelings from childhood onto the therapist

18 Token Economy Secondary reinforcers are given to clients to be “cashed in” for something positive.

19 Aversive Conditioning
Provides a negative response to a stimulus

20 Using medication to treat psychological issues
