1 Summary Goals: Evaluate summaries of “Flame”
9-3-15 Summary Goals: Evaluate summaries of “Flame” Begin work on summarizing “Cartographer”

2 Review: What IS a summary?
Brief version of the original text Includes key points, but not details Depth of summary depends on purpose “Flame and Filament” = 5 paragraphs 1-paragraph summary First sentence = main idea Other sentences = support/explanation

3 How did you do? Pair up, and read your summary aloud to your partner.
Decide which summary is “better” – and be prepared to explain WHY you think it is better. Be ready to read your summary aloud to the class. What made the “better” summary better? Explain.

4 Review: What to look for when you read
Indicators of KEY IDEAS: Title Subheadings Bold, italics, colors Tables, charts, images Anything that highlights text First & last paragraphs Other clues: Blank space (change of idea) Repetition (key word/phrase) Stories, examples (What’s the point?)

5 Define “cartographer.” Define “agnostic.”
Hint: Nouns & verbs are usually more important than adjectives & adverbs.

6 This article is 6 pages long. Where would you expect to find the thesis?
Opening line? End of opening paragraph? …of first page? …of first section?

7 STOP! Check previous paragraph.

8 Use remaining class time to read and annotate “The Agnostic Cartographer.” Discuss confusing parts with a classmate. Work on separating MAIN IDEAS from SUPPORT and EXPLANATIONS. For next time, bring your textbook and your summary to class. (You will revise your summary after class, before you turn it in for a grade.)
