2 The six trigonometric functions of a right triangle, with an acute angle , are defined by ratios of two sides of the triangle. θ hyp opp The sides of the right triangle are: adj  the side opposite the acute angle ,  the side adjacent to the acute angle ,  and the hypotenuse of the right triangle.

3 Trigonometric Functions
θ hyp The trigonometric functions are opp adj sine, cosine, tangent, cotangent, secant, and cosecant. sin  = cos  = tan  = hyp adj opp Trigonometric Functions

4 Trigonometric Functions
θ hyp The trigonometric functions are opp adj sine, cosine, tangent, cotangent, secant, and cosecant. sin  = cos  = tan  = csc  = sec  = cot  = opp hyp adj Note: sine and cosecant are reciprocals, cosine and secant are reciprocals, and tangent and cotangent are reciprocals. 5 Reciprocal Functions Another way to look at it…
sin  = 1/csc  csc  = 1/sin  cos  = 1/sec  sec  = 1/cos  tan  = 1/cot  cot  = 1/tan 

6 Given 2 sides of a right triangle you should be able to find the value of all 6 trigonometric functions. Example: 12 5

7 Example: Six Trig Ratios
Calculate the trigonometric functions for  . Calculate the trigonometric functions for . 4 3 5 The six trig ratios are sin  = sin α = cos  = cos α = tan  = What is the relationship of α and θ? tan α = cot  = cot α = sec  = They are complementary (α = 90 – θ) sec α = csc  = csc α = Example: Six Trig Ratios

9 Example 4A: Using Trigonometric Ratios to Find Lengths
Find the length. Round to the nearest hundredth. BC is adjacent to the given angle, B. You are given AC, which is opposite B. Since the adjacent and opposite legs are involved, use a tangent ratio.

10 Example 4A Continued Write a trigonometric ratio. Substitute the given values. Multiply both sides by BC and divide by tan 15°. BC  ft Simplify the expression.

11 Example 4B: Using Trigonometric Ratios to Find Lengths
Find the length. Round to the nearest hundredth. QR is opposite to the given angle, P. You are given PR, which is the hypotenuse. Since the opposite side and hypotenuse are involved, use a sine ratio.

12 Example 4B Continued Write a trigonometric ratio. Substitute the given values. 12.9(sin 63°) = QR Multiply both sides by 12.9. 11.49 cm  QR Simplify the expression.

13 Example 4C: Using Trigonometric Ratios to Find Lengths
Find the length. Round to the nearest hundredth. FD is the hypotenuse. You are given EF, which is adjacent to the given angle, F. Since the adjacent side and hypotenuse are involved, use a cosine ratio.

14 Example 4C Continued Write a trigonometric ratio. Substitute the given values. Multiply both sides by FD and divide by cos 39°. FD  m Simplify the expression.

15 Check It Out! Example 4a Find the length. Round to the nearest hundredth. DF is the hypotenuse. You are given EF, which is opposite to the given angle, D. Since the opposite side and hypotenuse are involved, use a sine ratio.

16 Check It Out! Example 4a Continued
Write a trigonometric ratio. Substitute the given values. Multiply both sides by DF and divide by sin 51°. DF  cm Simplify the expression.

17 Check It Out! Example 4b Find the length. Round to the nearest hundredth. ST is a leg. You are given TU, which is the hypotenuse. Since the adjacent side and hypotenuse are involved, use a cosine ratio.

18 Check It Out! Example 4b Continued
Write a trigonometric ratio. Substitute the given values. ST = 9.5(cos 42°) Multiply both sides by 9.5. ST  7.06 in. Simplify the expression.

19 Check It Out! Example 4c Find the length. Round to the nearest hundredth. BC is a leg. You are given AC, which is the opposite side to given angle, B. Since the opposite side and adjacent side are involved, use a tangent ratio.

20 Check It Out! Example 4c Continued
Write a trigonometric ratio. Substitute the given values. Multiply both sides by BC and divide by tan 18°. Simplify the expression. BC  ft

21 Check It Out! Example 4d Find the length. Round to the nearest hundredth. JL is the opposite side to the given angle, K. You are given KL, which is the hypotenuse. Since the opposite side and hypotenuse are involved, use a sine ratio.

22 Check It Out! Example 4d Continued
Write a trigonometric ratio. Substitute the given values. Multiply both sides by 13.6. JL = 13.6(sin 27°) JL  6.17 cm Simplify the expression.

23 Example 5: Problem-Solving Application
The Pilatusbahn in Switzerland is the world’s steepest cog railway. Its steepest section makes an angle of about 25.6º with the horizontal and rises about 0.9 km. To the nearest hundredth of a kilometer, how long is this section of the railway track?

24 Understand the Problem
Example 5 Continued 1 Understand the Problem Make a sketch. The answer is AC. 0.9 km

25 Example 5 Continued 2 Make a Plan is the hypotenuse. You are given BC, which is the leg opposite A. Since the opposite and hypotenuse are involved, write an equation using the sine ratio.

26 Example 5 Continued Solve 3 Write a trigonometric ratio. Substitute the given values. Multiply both sides by CA and divide by sin 25.6°. CA  km Simplify the expression.

27 Example 5 Continued 4 Look Back The problem asks for CA rounded to the nearest hundredth, so round the length to The section of track is 2.08 km.

28 Check It Out! Example 5 Find AC, the length of the ramp, to the nearest hundredth of a foot.

29 Understand the Problem
Check It Out! Example 5 Continued 1 Understand the Problem Make a sketch. The answer is AC.

30 Check It Out! Example 5 Continued
2 Make a Plan is the hypotenuse to C. You are given AB, which is the leg opposite C. Since the opposite leg and hypotenuse are involved, write an equation using the sine ratio.

31 Check It Out! Example 5 Continued
Solve 3 Write a trigonometric ratio. Substitute the given values. Multiply both sides by AC and divide by sin 4.8°. AC  ft Simplify the expression.

32 Check It Out! Example 5 Continued
4 Look Back The problem asks for AC rounded to the nearest hundredth, so round the length to The length of ramp covers a distance of ft.

33 Ex. 2: Solving a Right Triangle (h)
Solve the right triangle. Round decimals to the nearest tenth. 25° You are looking for opposite and hypotenuse which is the sin ratio. sin H = opp. hyp. Set up the correct ratio 13 sin 25° = h 13 Substitute values/multiply by reciprocal Substitute value from table or calculator 13(0.4226) ≈ h Use your calculator to approximate. 5.5 ≈ h
