Three possible mechanisms could control cadherin cluster (red) size, including precise size control (A), protein–protein interactions promote lateral clustering on the membrane (B), or kinetic balancing between cluster fusion and cluster fission (C). Each of these scenarios would predict a distribution of the concentration of clusters with n cadherins, cn versus the number of cadherins per cluster, as indicated below each of the illustrated hypothetical cluster patterns.
