1 AP Lab 11: Animal Behavior Assignment Sheet Below is a pic of sow bugs which are called for in the lab procedure..

2 Lab Write up Need … Title (Animal Behavior) Group Members Hypothesis
Always done in PEN Always done on lined paper- if you’ve been using a lab composition notebook. Need … Title (Animal Behavior) Group Members Hypothesis Illustrate your lab set up (including pic of sow bug, choice chamber with different conditions) Materials Needed Data Table (should be made before the experiment has begun Conclusion (thorough explanation of what was tested, how it was tested, and what the results mean)

3 Guidelines This is a formal lab write-up. Since it should all be in your own words, how you set up the experiment here is your focus. You MUST have a diagram of your experiment set-up. You MUST have a minimum of three trials You MUST have a data table You MUST have a graph of some kind (bar, pie, or line) Your hypothesis and conclusion should address whether your organisms move by kinesis OR taxis

4 About this Experiment…
This lab should have a problem that is to find whether your invertebrate organism of choice moves in an experimental setup by KINESIS or TAXIS Taxis- direct movement towards or away in response to a stimulus Kinesis- random movement in response to stimulus (unlike taxis- not directional)

5 Experimental Set-Up Ideas
Wet vs. Dry areas Light vs. Dark areas Cool vs Warm Bedding vs. Non-bedding Low vs. High pH Food Preference …or anything your imagination decides! Your Introduction MUST have background information on your invertebrate animal of choice. Esp. if it relates to experimental setup (ex: their preferred habitat in nature).

6 Don’t forget (a)… CONTROL! Very important. Think of how you will set this up. CONSTANTS! And be able to describe how you kept things constant in your experiment. Enough organisms! The more you have, the more reliable your results have the potential to be. Minimum of 10.
