Before you read a weather map, you need to learn a few map symbols.
3
An H stands for high pressure.
is a mass of cool, dry air that brings blue skies, fair weather and light winds.
4
An L stands for low pressure.
is a mass of warm, moist air that brings stormy weather and strong clouds.
5
A front is the line where air masses meet.
When warm and cold air meets, they make stormy weather.
6
A cold front has cold air replacing warm.
Blue lines show a cold front. Blue teeth show the direction it moves.
7
A warm front has warm air replacing cold.
Red lines show a warm front. Half circles show the direction it moves.
8
Air masses don’t move at a stationary front.
It is shown with alternating warm front and cold front symbols.
9
Weather maps have many other symbols.
Sunny Storms Cloudy Snow Rainy Partly Cloudy
10
