1 Assessment and Program Review Learning Centers
What’s the best way to share this process with accreditation?

2 What’s different about SLO assessment?
Four questions: What’s different about SLO assessment? What about this year’s Program Review? Any changes to data collection? What about TracDat? We’re simply bringing the language of prog rev in line with what people are actually doing. NOTE: Doesn’t say anything about the ILOs, which we revised to cover the services & learning centers!!! But never mind.

3 Q1: what’s different about SLO assessment?
We’re simply bringing the language of prog rev in line with what people are actually doing. NOTE: Doesn’t say anything about the ILOs, which we revised to cover the services & learning centers!!! But never mind.

4 More intentional Harnessed to continuous improvement
Focus on improving student learning Centered on research questions We’ve simplified a good deal. Leaving out the GE connection (although there is now an ILO that student services support)

5 A. Program Review language
(roughly) chronological Description of Program Results of Previous Program Review Current Assessments Planning We’ve simplified a good deal. Leaving out the GE connection (although there is now an ILO that student services support)

6 new language in section 3 (Assessment)
Reflect on recent assessment results for the center, including SLOs, best practices, and surveys. Identify trends and discuss areas in need of improvement. Specify how assessment informs center development and changes to the center. old language: Reflect on recent SLO assessment results for courses and degrees and certificates offered by the program. We’re simply bringing the language of prog rev in line with what people are actually doing. NOTE: Doesn’t say anything about the ILOs, which we revised to cover the services & learning centers!!! But never mind.

7 C. Assessment documentation routine
Assessment planning as an annual activity FALL Submit brief assessment plan SPRING: Submit brief check-in form (supporting documentation also welcome) EVEN YEARS: Program Review (summary & planning) We’ve simplified a good deal. Leaving out the GE connection (although there is now an ILO that student services support)

8 Assessment plans due in Fall
Fall - ASSESSMENT PLAN - Learning Centers AY SERVICE e.g., Writing Center ASPECT OF PROGRAM Specify the outcome or aspect of your service you want to find out about RESEARCH QUESTION What are you trying to find out? What’s your research question? RATIONALE Why does it matter? METHOD What data will answer your question, and how will you get it? NEXT STEPS / TIMELINE What happens next, and when? We’ve simplified a good deal. Leaving out the GE connection (although there is now an ILO that student services support)

9 EXAMPLE Fall - ASSESSMENT PLAN - Learning Center AY 2018-2019 SERVICE
ASPECT OF PROGRAM RESEARCH QUESTION RATIONALE METHOD NEXT STEPS / TIMELINE TAKE FIVE! Let’s generate a brainstorm for something

10 Check-in summaries due in Spring
Spring - ASSESSMENT PLAN - CHECK IN - Student Services AY SERVICE e.g., Counseling ASPECT OF PROGRAM The outcome or aspect of your service you are addressing DATA SUMMARY Attach spreadsheet / narrative / summary of results DISCUSSION Document faculty & staff discussion or analysis of results Link to meeting date or attach minutes if relevant ACTION PLAN Outline what steps you might take, or have taken STATUS Is this finished? Is the loop closed? Starting something new in the Fall, or is there sequelae to this? We’ve simplified a good deal. Leaving out the GE connection (although there is now an ILO that student services support)

11 A simple summary Spring - ASSESSMENT PLAN - CHECK IN - Student Services AY SERVICE ASPECT OF PROGRAM DATA SUMMARY DISCUSSION ACTION PLAN STATUS We’ve simplified a good deal. Leaving out the GE connection (although there is now an ILO that student services support)

12 Summary of changes Emphasis on research-question-driven assessment
Program Review: new chronological structure “assessment” language streamlined and clarified New documentation process (Assessment Plans / Check-In) We’ve simplified a good deal. Leaving out the GE connection (although there is now an ILO that student services support)

13 Q2: What about this year’s Program Review?
We’ve simplified a good deal. Leaving out the GE connection (although there is now an ILO that student services support)

14 New assessment language should be better
Reflects actual methods (best practices, surveys etc.) No references to “program” Open-ended question

15 2. Planning: no particular research question?
Possible problems You gathered data with no specific question in mind; now you have a specific question, but the data don’t answer it! What sort of research question might you ask? Solution Analyze the data you’ve got with the outcomes you’ve defined, and make sure to clarify your next specific question in your assessment plan (and Q4) Use an equity lens / GP lens Reflect on ILO alignment

16 3. What about ILO alignment?
Independent Learning and Development - The ability of students to develop, evaluate, and pursue personal, academic, and/or career goals. Students will be able to: Demonstrate effective study strategies; Articulate realistic and achievable academic and/or career goals; Identify and make use of college and community resources (academic and student support services) Language of Prog Rev no longer requires it, but feel free to discuss how well you’re serving this ILO in your Prog Rev.

17 4. Assessment plan forms No assessment plan forms from AY , or (we had TracDat) Current assessment plan form: Use for AY planning (i.e., summarizes assessment piece of Q4 - “Planning”) 2020: Assessment plans will form basis for Program Review assessment discussion Language of Prog Rev no longer requires it, but feel free to discuss how well you’re serving this ILO in your Prog Rev.

18 Q3: Any changes to rules on data collection?
We’ve simplified a good deal. Leaving out the GE connection (although there is now an ILO that student services support)

19 For learning centers… maybe not
Instruction Pose a research question Collect data that will answer that question Prioritize specific course- and program-SLOs for assessment Learning Centers ?

20 Possible data sources - under exploration
But note: Current data sources In-house surveys College surveys (Campus Climate & Satisfaction) Post-workshop surveys / quizzes Instructional quizzes / work SARS etc. Possible data sources - under exploration (i.e., not likely available for this Program Review) Marketing (alumni outreach) Ad hoc student achievement reports from PRIE Post transfer / employment data

21 Q4: What about TRACDAT? We’ve simplified a good deal. Leaving out the GE connection (although there is now an ILO that student services support)

22 Options for documentation:
Continue to use TracDat to store data, results and analysis, AND submit assessment plans to SLOAC Just submit assessment plans, along with any relevant data summaries, to SLOAC We’ve simplified a good deal. Leaving out the GE connection (although there is now an ILO that student services support)

23 And finally... We’ve simplified a good deal. Leaving out the GE connection (although there is now an ILO that student services support)

24 Resources (under development):
SLO website *under construction Coming soon Assessment Handbook We’ve simplified a good deal. Leaving out the GE connection (although there is now an ILO that student services support)
