2 Figure 1 Renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system. The renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system can be interrupted at different steps. Renin inhibitors inhibit the conversion of angiotensinogen into angiotensin I. Inhibitors of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE inhibitors) reduce the formation of the more potent angiotensin II, while angiotensin II receptor antagonists, also known as angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) or AT1-receptor antagonists, can prevent angiotensin II from acting on angiotensin receptors (AT). ACE cleaves a number of other peptides, including bradykinin, and this function is also inhibited by ACE inhibitors.
