1 THE BOOK OF JAMES Lesson 5 Chapter 1 vss. 9-11

2 If Only… James 1:9–11 (NASB95) But the brother of humble circumstances is to glory in his high position; and the rich man is to glory in his humiliation, because like flowering grass he will pass away. For the sun rises with a scorching wind and withers the grass; and its flower falls off and the beauty of its appearance is destroyed; so too the rich man in the midst of his pursuits will fade away. .

3 If Only… Remember; The letter of James is not so much Proverbial as it is Circular. He builds on topics as he introduces different aspects wisdom Riches Trials Trials

4 If Only… Trials and wisdom; Trials are significant Trials are hard Trials are bigger than we are Wisdom helps us understand, accept and find Joy. Wisdom is found in the Gospel; applied by the Spirit I believe that in nothing is the ordinary type of Christian opinion amongst us, in this generation, so defective as in the obscurity into which it has pushed that truth, of the Spirit of God as actually dwelling in men’s hearts. And that, I believe, is to a large extent the reason why the other truths of Christianity have so little power upon people. It is of little use to hold a Christianity which begins and ends with the fact of Christ’s death on the Cross.- Alexander Maclaren

5 If Only… Wisdom? …check! Money?.... Aaah, back to wisdom?
James 1:9 (NASB95) But the brother of humble circumstances is to glory in his high position; Luke 6:20–23 (NASB95) And turning His gaze toward His disciples, He began to say, “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. “Blessed are you who hunger now, for you shall be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh. Blessed are you when men hate you, and ostracize you, and insult you, and scorn your name as evil, for the sake of the Son of Man. Be glad in that day and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven. For in the same way their fathers used to treat the prophets.”

6 If Only… Wisdom? …check! Money?.... Aaah, back to wisdom?
Romans 8:16–18 (NASB95) The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him. For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us.

7 If Only… Wisdom? …check! Money?.... Aaah, back to wisdom?
James 1:10–11 (NASB95) and the rich man is to glory in his humiliation, because like flowering grass he will pass away. For the sun rises with a scorching wind and withers the grass; and its flower falls off and the beauty of its appearance is destroyed; so too the rich man in the midst of his pursuits will fade away. Isaiah 40:6–7 (NASB95) …All flesh is grass, and all its loveliness is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades, When the breath of the Lord blows upon it; Surely the people are grass.

8 If Only… Wisdom? …check! Money?.... Aaah, back to wisdom?
Luke 12:16–21 (NASB95) And He told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man was very productive. And he began reasoning to himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no place to store my crops?’ Then he said, ‘This is what I will do: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. ‘And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years to come; take your ease, eat, drink and be merry.” ’ “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your soul is required of you; and now who will own what you have prepared?’ 21 So is the man who stores up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”

9 If Only… Wisdom? …check! Money?.... Aaah, back to wisdom?
Philippians 3:7–11 (NASB95) But whatever things were gain to me, those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ. More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ, and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith, that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death; in order that I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.

10 If Only… Wisdom? …check! Money?.... Aaah, back to wisdom?
Jeremiah 9:23–24 (NASB95) Thus says the Lord, “Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches; but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord who exercises lovingkindness, justice and righteousness on earth; for I delight in these things,” declares the Lord.
