1 Increasing Units – Impact on ADT?
Depends: ADT unit requirement for Major Prep Course- major or GE How units are applied Issue: English 1A (4 unit) Course not required as Major Prep Course is GE only Regardless of unit value; only 3 units are required

2 ADT Formula General Education + Major + Electives = ADT CSU Pattern
39 units IGETC 37 units units Range depends on major 0-5 units Range depends on major 60 total transferable units

3 GE Units Allowed for Double Count
CSU IGETC Area A = 9 units Area B = 9 units Area C = 9 units Area D = 9 units Area E = 3 units Total: 39 fixed units Area 1 = 9 units Area 2 = 3 units Area 3 = 9 units Area 4 = 9 units Area 5 = 7 units Total: 37 fixed units Regardless of unit values for Gavilan Courses

4 STEM vs. Non-Stem CSU = 39 *STEM = 33 (*6 units after transfer)
Fixed Number of Units IGETC: Fixed number of units CSU = 39 *STEM = 33 (*6 units after transfer) IGETC = 37 *STEM = 31 (*6 units after transfer) Chancellor’s Office determines which ADT uses STEM GE (Chemistry + Biology)

5 AS-T CSIS Major Courses: GE Units: Math 1A (4 units) -----GE Area B
Math 1B (4 units) Phys 4A (4 units) ---- GE Area B Phys 4B (4 units) CSIS 28 ( 3 units) CSIS 26 (3 units) CSIS 27 or 46 (3 units) CSIS 5 or 24 or 45 (3 units) TOTAL Major UNITS = 28 GE Units: CSU (39) – fixed IGETC (37) - fixed

6 Double-Count (DC) CSU IGETC
AS-T CSIS CSU IGETC Units DC for GE: Math : 3 units Physics: 4 units Courses Counted for Major: Math 1A: 4 units Physics 4A: 4 units Units DC for GE: Math : 3 units Physics: 4 units Courses Counted for Major: Math 1A: 4 units Physics 4A: 4 units 7 units 7 units 8 units 8 units

7 AS-T CSIS (NON-STEM) CSU Fixed units: 39 IGETC Fixed units: 37
CSU units 39 Double Count -7 Total GE units 32 Major units + 28 Total units 60 Degree APPROVED IGETC units 37 Double Count -7 Total GE units 30 Major units + 28 Total units 58 Elective units + 2 Total units 60 Degree APPROVED

8 Impact When Units Increase-Major
AS-T CSIS Impact When Units Increase-Major CSU IGETC CSU units 39 Double Count -7 Total GE units 32 Major units +29 Total units 61 (Ex. Math 1A to 5 units – the GE double count stays the same) Degree DENIED IGETC units 37 Double Count -7 Total GE units 30 Major units + 29 Total units 59 Elective units + 1 Total units 60 Degree APPROVED

9 AS-T Chemistry CSU STEM Fixed: 33 IGETC STEM Fixed: 31
CSU units 33 Double Count -7 Total GE units 26 Major units + 36 Total units 62 Degree DENIED IGETC units 31 Double Count -7 Total GE units 24 Major units + 36 Total units 60 Degree APPROVED STEM GE patterns approved for CHEM & BIO only

10 Summary GE fixed units– regardless of our college unit increase
Unit increases in Major can impact viability of ADT Impact of GE units increase= students take additional units not required for transfer More units per course; less courses per term; longer stay at Gavilan Intent of ADT =ensure students only took 60 transferable units for transfer Campus challenge: How do we offer GE courses that won’t exceed the fixed amount required for transfer? How do we deal with “unit creep”? Increases in units impact our local General Education pattern-already highest unit in region; students complete more units than the 60 required
