Christopher Columbus was exploring for a shorter route to Asia. In October 1492, Columbus and his crew landed in the Caribbean. He never landed on North America. Where Christopher Columbus thought he had landed.

10 John Locke John Locke, a political philosopher, wrote that all people were born with natural rights, including the right to life, liberty, and property. Locke believed that power comes from the consent of the governed. A social contract. Locke’s ideas of Natural Rights will be embedded (placed) in Thomas Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence.

12 Declaration of independence
Thomas Jefferson was the main author of the Declaration of Independence. He used the ideas of John Locke and Thomas Paine. The Declaration is a list of grievances (complaints) against the King of England.

18 American Revolution

19 Causes Between 1689 and 1763, the British and French fought a series of costly wars. The British Parliament wanted the colonists to pay new taxes to help the empire. The colonists resisted the taxes.

20 Effects War broke out between the colonies and the British in 1775, at Concord, Massachusetts. The war continued until the American colonists under the command of George Washington finally defeated the British at Yorktown in 1781. In 1783, Great Britain (England) gave the United States the recognition of independence under The Treaty of Paris.
