1 Religion in World Culture

2 Course Intro How do we study religion academically?
What are our rights and responsibilities to each other and the law? What is religion?

3 The First Amendment Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances

4 Abington v. Schempp (1963) “…it might well be said that one’s education is not complete without a study of comparative religion or the history of religion and its relationship to the advancement of civilization. It certainly may be said that the Bible is worthy of study for its literary and historic qualities. Nothing we have said here indicates that such study of the Bible or of religion, when presented objectively as part of a secular program of education, may not be effected consistently with the First Amendment.” "We repeat and again reaffirm that neither a State nor the Federal Government can constitutionally force a person 'to profess a belief or disbelief in any religion.'“ —Supreme Court Justice Tom C. Clark

6 Religious study in Public Schools
“Study about religion is also important if students are to value religious liberty, the first freedom guaranteed in the Bill of Rights. Moreover, knowledge of the roles of religion in the past and present promotes cross-cultural understanding essential to democracy and world peace.” — "Religion in the Public School Curriculum: Questions and Answers," issued by a coalition of 17 major religious and educational organizations

7 Teaching of Religion v. Teaching about Religion
The school’s approach to religion is academic not devotional. The school strives for student awareness of religions, but does not press for student acceptance of any one religion. The school sponsors study about religion, not practice of religion. The school exposes students to a diversity of religious views; it does not impose any particular view. The school educates about all religions; it does not promote or denigrate any religion. The school informs students about various beliefs; it does not seek to conform students to any particular belief.

8 The Fundamental Modes of Religion

9 The Six Dimensions of Religion

10 So… What is Religion?

11 Five Questions all World Religions attempt to answer:
Who am I? Where am I going? What is my purpose? Is there an existence after I cease to exist here? What is right and wrong or good and evil?
