1 What is offensive Content?
Material that makes a person upset or uncomfortable

2 SPJ Code of Ethics Minimize Harm Ethical journalists treat sources, subjects and colleagues as human beings deserving of respect.

3 What could be offensive? Any of the 9 exceptions! Here’s a few:
Obscenity: material is obscene if it “appeals to a prurient (unhealthy or unwholesome) interest in sex” Deceptive or misleading ads or those for illegal services/products Expression on school grounds that causes a material and substantial disruption to school activities Fighting words: When a person uses offensive language that disrupts the peace

4 Indecent vs. obscene Remember the FCC has the power to “regulate a radio broadcast that is indecent but not obscene” (FAS.org) Cable operators, on channels primarily dedicated to sexually oriented programming should fully scramble or otherwise fully block such channels, or to not provide such programming when a significant number of children are likely to be viewing it, which, under an FCC regulation meant to transmit the programming only from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
