1 NEWS 2 Sarah Walters Deputy Clinical Lead Rapid Response Service

2 NEWS Why NEWS? The original NEWS was released in 2012 and implemented in NHS settings and other health care settings. The NEWS was created to standardise the process of recording, scoring and responding to changes in routinely measured physiological parameters in acutely ill patients. The NEWS was founded on the premise that (i) early detection, (ii) timeliness and (iii) competency of the clinical response comprise a triad of determinants of clinical outcome in people with acute illness. You might remember local protocols such as EWS, MEWS There were many different systems inplace across different trusts but as you can imagine this could cause a range of difficulties when working with multi agencies and across Trusts

4 It has been adapted based on feedback since its original publication with such ammendments as
= Change in colour from R,A,G = Realligned to work in a systematic ABCDE approach alongside Resus Council = Scores added onto the chart
