1 RI04 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings; analyze the impact of a specific word choice on meaning and tone, including analogies or allusions to other texts.

2 What is the difference between figurative, connotative, and technical meanings?
Figurative--language that includes figures of speech or compares 2 or more things. This language helps the reader visualize and experience events and emotions in a story.

3 Connotative the feeling suggested by a word or phrase
Example: cheap vs thrifty

4 Technical Technical meaning is used to talk about a specific subject area of discipline. These words, or groups of words, relate to a specific process or activity.

5 Example For example, if you were working in a retail store and a new shipment came in, you might be asked to go through the shipment and create an itemized list of all the products in the shipment. You might also be asked to compare final counts. To do this, you must understand the technical meaning of itemized list and final counts; itemize means to list separately, and final counts refer to the number of products the supplier counted as shipped in comparison to the number of products received in the shipment.

6 What is word choice? Specific words chosen to affect meaning

7 The author’s attitude toward the subject
What is Tone? The author’s attitude toward the subject

8 How does word choice impact the meaning and tone of a text?
Just as with your speaking tone, your written tone can reveal any emotion or attitude a person can feel. Tone can be positive or negative, happy or sad, angry or peaceful, hopeful or desperate, and so on.
