1 Solving Quadratic Equations
9-3

2 Vocabulary Roots of the Equation (Zeros of the Function) – the solution of a quadratic equation in standard form and the x- intercepts of the graph of the related function.

3 Solutions x² - 1 = 0 x² = 0 x² + 1 = 0 graph y = x² - 1 graph y = x² graph y = x² + 1 There are two there is one the are no real Solutions, ± 1 solution, 0 solution.

4 Simplifying Square Roots
if you do not get a whole number when you do the square root, then you will need to simplify it See if one of the factors is a perfect square if so, factor the square root into two parts, one factor should be the biggest perfect square. Take the square root of the perfect square and leave the second part as a square root. If not, leave as a square root.

5 Examples

6 Solving by Using Square Roots
Solving by Square Roots Get the square on one side of the equal sign by itself. Take the square root of both sides. A square and a square root cancel each other out. * you cannot take the square root of a negative number.

7 Examples Together On Your Own 1) n² = 49 2) -5m² = -125 3) 8n² - 2 = 6
a) r² = b) 8m² = c) 3p² - 6 = -29
