1 School Redesign in kansas

2 Introduce ourselves – Tammy then Jay
Tammy - Our job titles and our role is to work closely with each of the 7 Redesign districts and their building leadership teams to be prepared to launch a transformed school system by this time next year. Jay - Metaphor – just as the original Mercury 7 astronauts were already breaking the sound barrier prior to being selected to go into space, the schools we are about to announce have already starting breaking some of the traditional educational barriers to student success that have been entrenched in Kansas schools for decades. We are so excited the 7 districts and 14 schools we are about to announce have stepped up to accept this challenge of redesigning their school system to be centered on Each student, the educational equivalent of going to the Moon. Tammy - At this time, we will announce each district selected and they will have an opportunity to share a little about why they’ve chosen to be part of this transformational endeavor. 5 What Kansans want from their schools
Kansas children need quality preschool including all day kindergarten Changes need to be made to address school culture New dynamic roles for counselor and social workers Collaboration between schools and businesses Reorganize schools around students, not the system Community service needs to play a bigger role Tammy, first 3, Jay last 3 - We also learned that Kansans believe Every child needs access to quality preschool education School culture needs to be addressed – we must value the student going to a two-year or certification program as much as a student attending a four-year institution. Counselors need to be able to help students identify and explore career interests Must be collaboration between schools and businesses to prepare students for postsecondary pursuits Schools must be reorganized around the student, not the system to meet unique needs Community service is an important part of preparing students for life after high school. How is this different from how we do school now?
