1 How Muscles are NAMED 3 Major Naming Criteria

2 1. Direction of Muscle Fibers
Note a muscle FIBER is a muscle CELL. Skeletal muscle fibers are long and skinny like sticks.

3 1. Direction of Muscle Fibers
Orbicularis: circular Rectus: straight Oblique: slanted

4 2. Size or Shape of Muscle Deltoid: triangular
Trapezius: pair of triangles (like a diamond)

5 2. Size or Shape of Muscle Major: larger Minor: smaller
Pectoralis Major Pectoralis Minor

6 2. Size or Shape of Muscle Maximus: large Longus: Long Brevis: Short
Gluteus Maximus Fibularis LONGUS Fibularis BREVIS

7 3. Location of the Muscle Region of the human body:
Biceps brachii – located in ARM Biceps femoris – located in THIGH Rectus abdominis = located in ABDOMEN

8 3. Location of the Muscle Anterior vs. Posterior:
Tibialis ANTERIOR – located on FRONT of Tibia Latissimus DORSI – located on BACK

9 3. Location of the Muscle Medial vs. Lateral:
Vastus MEDIALIS: located on INNER side of thigh Vastus LATERALIS: located on OUTER side of thigh
